Optimistic

“…But first I’m going to be a doctor, and George, for one, still thinks that’s pretty funny. I couldn’t be bothered with that. I’m going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!” (p. 50)

This demonstrates how Beneatha is optimistic. Someone with optimistic features is looking toward the future in a hopeful and positive way. Although, Beneatha's dreams are belittled she makes sure that everyone knows she is not giving up. George and others believe she can not be a doctor because she is a female and African American. Beneatha believes in herself and stays optimistic.

Persistent

Walter to Beneatha: “Who the hell told you you have to be a doctor? If you so crazy ‘bout messing ‘round with sick people—then go be a nurse like other women—or just get married and be quiet…” (p. 38)

Beneatha is a very persistent throughout A Raisin in the Sun. Walter discourages her by saying she should just be a normal woman and give up trying to be a doctor. She stays persistent when sticking to her dream job. Without persistence Beneatha could have given up but instead keeps striving forward.

Personally I do sympathize with Beneatha. She is a hardworking person who just wants a good and successful life. She doesn't care what others say as long as she thinks she is right. I sympathize with her because I too am working hard in order to have a great future. Beneatha is a good person in my opinion. Although, sometimes she can be harsh and vague she is most of the time protecting herself and the ones around her.

This image represents dreams. All the images in the art work are shown in a shape, form or color. The colors in the image are very vibrant and colorful not dark and somber. The bright colors show that a dream should always be bright and positive. A human is shown that splits into many different animals, patterns, and designs. One of the main animals in the artwork are the birds. Beneatha is just like one of them...independent and courageous. The mood is very chaotic but also soothing. It seems chaotic because of how intricate and detailed it is but then again is soothing because all of the images working in and out of each other in a peaceful way.

She is working hard to get away from her past/present life. Beneatha does not want to be lower class with her family and instead wants to make her own money and move on. This quotes relates to Beneatha because it talks about moving on and to not get wrapped up in the negative. She uses this negativity as ambition to move on.

Source: https://www.familyfriendpoems.com/poem/changing-the-past

I chose Life Goes On by Lil Baby to relate to Beneatha. She is a hard working woman who wants to be successful and take care of herself and her family. The rapper talks about how he moved on from people in his life. Also, he says how he never listened to distractions. She will not listen to any negative comments made to her because she has a tunnel vision on what she wants in life. This song is a good representation to Beneatha.

Post 8 - Theme - Fences/A Raisin in the Sun Connection

Fences and A Raisin in the Sun both have characters that want to follow their dream. A main theme of the two story's are that dreams some times do not come true but everything will work out in the end. Fences shows Cory the son of the main character Troy dreaming of playing football at college and maybe professional football later on in his life. His dad shuts down his dreams but then keeps on working and joins the Army. Although, he is upset, he is later grateful for his dad and everything he did. A Raisin in the Sun shows Walter dreaming of owning a liquor store. His dream falls apart when Mama spends the money on a new house instead of his store. Walter eventually realizes it was a good idea. These two examples show the first connection between Fences and A Raisin in the Sun.

The second theme that relates Fences and A Raisin in the Sun is that family is one of the most important things to keep even going through hard times. A Raisin in the Sun has Walter fighting with the whole family and at one point leaves the house. Walter is not in the right state of mind and when he finally realizes what he has done his family is still there to forgive and love him. In Fences, when Rose finds out Troy cheated on her, Cory is there to give her comfort. Cory is there for his mom because he understands the rough time she is going through. Fences and A Raisin in the Sun share many connections.
