One attribute of self-reliance she has is nonconformity. Charlie in the books is technically not supposed to exist, but even when she finds that out it doesn't stop her from doing what is necessary to keep her friends safe and moving forward with her short-lived life. No matter what other people told him, he found the courage in himself to venture out into the cold, harsh wilderness of Alaska and fend for himself. He also seemed to be misunderstood by many, as they saw what he was doing was dangerous (justifiably so) and became worried for him, possibly trying to make him back out of what he was doing.
