Meth use can cause rapid tooth decay and gum disease in a condition commonly known as “meth mouth.” Symptoms include a clenched jaw, trouble eating, headaches, and jaw pain. Treatment can include cosmetic surgery in extreme cases. Meth can also affect our immune system. Meth use can weaken your body’s defenses against germs. It may even increase the likelihood of infection from pathogens. Meth can also worsen conditions like HIV and hepatitis B and C. Injecting meth can make you more likely to catch these diseases, too. 


Brain: When a person takes meth, surges of the neurotransmitter dopamine flood the reward circuit in the brain. This pathway regulates a person’s sense of reward and pleasure. Because of this, meth essentially teaches an individual’s brain to repeat taking the drug as a means of re-creating this pleasure. Taking meth, especially in high doses and extended periods of time it can lead to brain damage, cognitive problems, and mental health problems, some of which could be lasting.
