She is characterized as a "nonconformist" and maintains the "integrity of [her] mind" because she does things, such as wear a mockingjay pin, that mean a lot to her even though she will get in trouble for it. Katniss acts true to her morals and "advance[s] on Chaos and the Dark" by standing up to the Capitol and being ready to fight against the tyranny of her totalitarian government. 
She is also brave because she speaks "words as hard as cannon balls" to President Snow and other elites that are significantly more powerful than her.
