These three maps show the dramatic loss of native forest cover in NZ. Before human settlement, about 80% New Zealand was covered in forest.

In 2005, after more than 150 years of logging, native forest covered just 24.8% of New Zealand. Most of it was in reserves. Planted exotic forest covered 7.7% of the land. Because of the decline of native habitat and the introduction of pests, native biodiversity has reduced. This is why New Zealand has such a large number of threatened species. Just remember, if you see pasture, before human settlement, it was either forest, wetland!

Otaua School Rat Rangers

Otaua School Rat Rangers have been going for over 10 years. Here's a video they made back in 2019. Each year new students join the team and are taught how to look after the trapline by the experienced students. They are very proud of the mahi they are doing!
