David is a little kid who goes to school and gets in all kinds of trouble. He has to be told not to run, yell, and push. He is late to class and gets in trouble for chewing gum. He doesn't raise his hands or keep them to himself when he is all messy. David doesn't pay attention in class, he looks out the window. He cuts the line at lunch and can't wait his turn. When he gets in trouble, he blames other students. David is loud as he bangs pencils on his desk and asks to go to the bathroom too much. The final straw is when he draws all over his desk and has to stay after school to clean the desks. David cleans every desk until it's shiny and sparkly. He finally gets a "good job" and a gold star!

The main character in this story is David. Some other characters are his teacher and his classmates, but it mostly revolves around him. The character is partially based on the author, David Shannon, who got in trouble a lot in elementary school.

I loved reading these books when I was younger. I always enjoyed the stories themselves as well as the illustrations. They are strange, but I loved them and I still enjoy them. The colors are bright and I always cracked up about David's teeth. When I was young, I was an avid rule follower. I think I just enjoyed reading stories about this rebellious little boy who couldn't keep out of trouble because he did things I never did, like running and yelling at school or shouting out. I saw a student in my field/assigned classroom with one of these books and the memories came back!

How to use these books in the classroom

I think that this book or any of the David series are great for a classroom. They are appropriate and the illustrations are appealing to look at. This story could be used just for fun. It can also be read to a class at the beginning of the year to help understand expectations (mostly what NOT to do). Another thing to do is to read it to a group of students that are struggling to follow expectations or have inappropriate behavior often. It can also help kids to learn how to write stories or draw since the sentences are not overly complex and neither are the illustrations. It provides a good model.
