Long ago, the Gods blessed the Earth with flat and smooth land. The people who lived there had everything they needed: fertile soil for crops and expansive grasslands. But as time went on, they became greedy and began to use the land for their benefit. They destroyed the earth, depleting its resources and ruining its beauty. The Gods, horrified by the people's actions, decided to teach them a lesson. The ground shook and rumbled, and suddenly, massive peaks began to rise. They were now unable to use the lands freely since large barriers restricted their travels and altered their resources. These large peaks were the first mountains.

This story reminds me of the 2011 tsunami and earthquake disaster in Japan. The sudden and uncontrollable forces left people to be fighting for their survival, just like in Into Thin Air where the climbers got caught in a storm and were stuck in deadly situations, having to make decisions fast to survive. They both show the power of nature and the courage and fear that appear when faced with making split-second decisions to survive. "

“Attempting to climb Everest is an intrinsically irrational act—a triumph of desire over sensibility.”

Into Thin Air reminds me of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, where human ambition and inadequate preparation led to disaster. Similar to the climbers underestimating Everest, the oil company overlooked safety protocols, resulting in an environmental catastrophe. Both incidents reveal the risks when pushing limits without caution, whether it’s summiting a dangerous peak or drilling deep underwater. Like the climbers in this book, those involved faced moral and ethical scrutiny for their decisions.

“None of them imagined that a horrible ordeal was drawing nigh. Nobody suspected that by the end of that long day, every minute would matter.”

This quote from Into Thin Air captures the unpredictability of life-threatening situations, such as the Thailand cave accident. In 2018, twelve young boys and their soccer coach entered the Tham Luang cave system, expecting an adventure, unaware of the disaster that would soon test their survival. Like the climbers in Into Thin Air, who did not anticipate the events ahead, the boys and their coach entered the cave without imagining the floodwaters that would trap them. The rescue efforts in Thailand underscored the urgency of time and the difficulty of saving lives in extreme circumstances.

" The Everest was withing the realm of possibility for regular guys...... the biggest obstacles is probably taking time off from you job and leaving family"

This reminds me of the disaster of South Korea ferry in 2019 where many parents lost their kids as more than 300 people died. This gives me the same view like some mountain climbers take off with a smile to their family but never come back. The disaster tear many parents heart as their children couldn't survive.

The quote, “Getting to the top of any given mountain was considered much less important than how one got there: prestige was earned by tackling the most unforgiving routes with minimal equipment, in the boldest style imaginable,” reminds me of Ernest Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition in 1914-1917. Shackleton and his crew faced extreme hardship as they attempted to cross Antarctica. Despite their failure to complete the journey, Shackleton's leadership and the crew's perseverance in surviving the harsh conditions earned them great respect. Like the climbers on Everest, their focus was on how they tackled the challenge, not just the destination, proving that the journey and resilience in the face of adversity can define success.

The quote, "With enough determination, any bloody idiot can get up this hill. The trick is to get back down alive," from Chapter 14 of Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, holds deeper significance beyond the harrowing experiences on Everest. It speaks to universal truths about ambition, success, and the consequences of pursuing one's goals at all costs. In careers, for example, the desire to climb the corporate ladder can drive people to push themselves to the breaking point, sacrificing health, relationships, and personal well-being. The true challenge, akin to descending Everest, is maintaining balance and ensuring that success does not come at the expense of one's life or core values.

" Fighting to maintain a grip on reality, I started talking to myself out loud - keep it together"

This moment highlights the profound isolation and vulnerability climbers feel on the mountain, where their survival depends as much on their mental resilience as on their physical strength. By verbalizing his determination to stay focused, Krakauer illustrates the inner battle that all climbers face against the elements, their own bodies, and their minds.
