Directed Summary:
In the article "Eating the Hyphen," Lily Wong, who dabbles in food writing after earning her bachelor's degree in Williams College, demonstrates that being a Chinese-American has affected her ways of dining. Growing up in the U.S and being a second generation Chinese-American, Wong feels like the way she eats is vastly different from that of her family. The way she eats dumplings has been criticized by her grandmother, who would look at her with disgust as she goes to grab ketchup to eat with her dumplings. Because of the way she eats Chinese food, she jokes that her style of eating dumplings is the hyphen between Chinese and American to represent her own identity.
Ways to use it with Pollan's article:
Wong simply enjoys her food; to her, food represents more of a cultural aspect rather than a nutritional one. She would not change the way she eats her dumplings.

With the development of society, cultural communication provides people more chances to contact different culture. People from different countries have their own understanding of other cultures. According to Wong’s habit of eating dumplings, she uses a western way to eat Chinese food. In the eassy, she says:’’I need a fork, a knife, a pair of chopsticks, and ketchup before I eat my dumplings.” It is understandable to use such a way to eat Chinese food because people will always choose the easiest and most comfortable way to eat food. Sometimes, I use fork to eat noodles even though I am a Chinese. I feel it is as convinent as using chopsticks. Therefore, as long as people enjoy the food, there is no judgement for them to choose their own way of eating.

As Pollan says, the way Americans think about eating food is making them unhealthy. Though Americans are trying to measure the food intake to have a healthier life, their idea is only opposing to what they really want to do. Eating food is about passion. If we don’t enjoy eating, then there is no chance that it would make us happy and healthy either. According to the article “We are what we eat: Asian Americans and food,” Oliver Wang, a professor of sociology at CSU-LB, explains that food isn’t just about eating, it is about passion and connection with other people. Wang says, "learning to love our food was learning to love ourselves, learning to love heritage." Having similar food brings people together and brings pleasure to our lives. Because eating food that we all enjoy brings pleasure, it helps us boost our happiness as well. Pollan states that if people don’t enjoy their food and only focuse on becoming “healthier”, they won’t be able to reach that goal. He explains that Americans need to enjoy their food rather than worrying about the calories they are consuming every day.

Zombies vs. The Joy of Canning: Motivation in the Productive Home

Although I agree with Erica Strauss about the benefits of cultivating your own food in her article “Zombies vs. The Joy of Canning”, I believe many people don’t have the time and passion required to nurture their own produce. Because buying pre-made food from the supermarket is easier and less expensive, people benefit themselves by spending less time in the kitchen. Everybody in our society is different, and not everyone has the pleasure of being able to pick their own food. Growing your own produce is difficult and takes a lot of time and money to reach the final product. Many people don’t have the resources or the space to begin cultivating. The author believes “You have to love food enough to work for it”. Not everybody has the same passion the author has for food. For example, my uncle is a business man working in china. He lives such fast-paced life, he doesn’t have time to cook his own food. The best way for him to eat is buying pre-made food from the market. Everyone needs food for energy but not all people are interested in how it’s made. Therefore, shopping at a supermarket is a sufficient way of obtaining produce.

According to “Why Shame Won’t Stop Obesity” by Dhruv Khullar, we should not shame fat people for being obese, instead, we should focus on providing a better and healthier food environment. As Khullar walks down into the hospital he works at, he notices that many of the food options are the reasons why his patients are unable to lose weight. The dilemma Khullar faced was choosing between “the fried chicken or the four-cheese pizza.”; however, none of the choices were by any means “healthy.” Because of the unhealthy food choices that we are surrounded by, many of us do not have a choice on what we eat. He then proposes few ways to reverse the current food trend by providing monetary incentives to promote the production of and access to healthy food and minimizing junk food advertising, especially towards the younger audiences. We should focus on how to eat healthier instead of succumbing to the limited food options we have in order to completely get rid of obesity.

In “College in America,” Caroline Bird states various reasons on why a college education may not be the best choice for all high school graduates. The reasons include long term a big money investment and colleges’ little academic contributions toward particular career fields. Becaue colleges seem to be the one and only way to identify a person’s intelligence and get benefits from having higher education, young people are convinced to get into colleges for better futures. I think I disagree with Bird and her argument does not apply to current high school graduates. Since the economy has been changing over time, the money investement is bigger than before; however, colleges do prepare what is ahead, colleges offer experiences and resources to assist with certain career choices and earning potentials are getting better.

Caroline Bird argues that intellectual work only comes natural to a few and supports the idea that not everyone is smart enough to go to college. However, college should be challenging in some way to motivate us to push beyond our boundaries. A friend of my attended community college after graduating from high school, and he was later accepted into UCLA. Even though he was not consider "smart," he still achieved academic success. Community college taught him how to work harder and manage his time better, thus everyone has the potential to "be smart."

In the essay, “ College in America,” Caroline Bird, an author who earned an MA in comparative literature from the university of Toledo, argues that a college education may not be the best choice for all high school graduates because it is expensive and contributes very little to what happens after graduation. She also believes that college education is only a type of intellectual work natural only to a few, so not everyone is smart enough to be a college student in her view. Also, there are not enough job offerings because lots of people have the same degree.

Bird’s arguments of college degrees no longer guarantee a job, and there are other ways to learn working skills are still valid in today’s society. However, she is wrong that a college education is not suitable for every student because going to college can be learning process of being mature and self-development besides earning a STEM degree and get a high salary.
