The most interesting influence on modern day society that I read about was the concept of the marathon. I learned that the marathon originated as the distance a soldier ran from the battlefield to Athens to announce the victory of Athenians against the Persians in 490 BC. In ancient greece, the marathon was not considered a sport. Today, we know marathons as a race citizens participate in -- some for personal achievement, others for competition.

Something that surprised me most was learning about the origin of the marathon. When I think of Ancient Greece in relation to sports, my mind instantly jumps to the Olympic games. I didn't know that marathons were based off of " the distance a soldier ran from the battlefield to Athens to announce the victory of Athenians against the Persians in 490 BC."

One thing that surprised me after reading the article was the influence on sport. I knew the Olympic games originated from Greece, but I did not know that present day marathons were inspired from there. I thought it was interesting that it didn't even start out as a sport, it was just a solider running back to Athens, annoucing their victory. That is so crazy that after that people decided they wanted to run for that long for fun! I would want to know when the actual first competition was held and where.
