Khieu Samphan and Neuon Chea, two former leaders of the Khmer Rouge, were found guilty of genocide. This was obviously good news; however, it happened nearly 40 years after the genocide took place. To this day, it was the only conviction against the Khmer Rouge in relation to genocide. “Now only three people have been tried, while thousands of people were killers. It's not reasonable to expect that all these thousands are put on trial, but only three is also not sufficient either” (Hoekstra). Before the genocide education in Cambodia good, and then the Khmer Rogue decided to change that. In the text it says, “Research by Thomas Clayton finds statistics from the Ministry of Education that 75 percent of all teachers and 96 percent of all tertiary students were killed” (Headley). The Cambodia people were left with a very poor education system, and they have no teachers. Furthermore, the population was much lower due to the amount of deaths that took place. Also, there was a lack of food and proper nutrition which was also continuing to kill people. Once Vietnam had taken over, they created a pseudo-socialism regime composed of Khmer Rouge defectors. Those who were loyal to the Khmer Rouge regime fled to the jungles on the Thai border so that they could send in Guerrilla attacks on Vietnam. The former members received aid from western countries in order to keep their seat at the UN. Even the United States voted in favor of keeping Cambodia in the UN. Although they did not condone their actions, they sought to show disapproval of Vietnams occupation of Cambodia which was solely an action based on Cold War politics. The two groups continued to clash for a decade while being sponsored by the Soviet Union and China. This ultimately led to hundreds of thousands of refugees going into Thailand in search for food, shelter, and safety.
