Born in Poland in 1867, Marie studied chemistry and physics in France. It was she who named the term and discovered two new chemical elements: radium and polonium. Her first Nobel Prize-for radiation research in 1903-was shared with her husband Pierre Curie and physicist Henri Becquerel. The second, in chemistry, in 1911, was due to the discovery of the element radium.

Marie began her studies as the basis for her thesis on radioactivity by Henri Becquerel, who was a French scientist who discovered the radiation emitted by uranium. Thus, she and her husband Pierre began their work by discovering the high activity of uranium-rich minerals. She found that it is possible to measure the radiation level of uranium because the amount of uranium and thorium in the compound is proportional to the intensity of this radiation. She also found that the ability to emit radiation does not depend on how the atoms are arranged in an atom, but rather on the interior of the atom itself.

Radium is a radioactive element that comes from the uranium-238 and thorium-232 decay series. It is estimated that there is approximately 1 ppt (part per trillion) of radium in the earth's crust, and it has several radioactive isotopes, the most stable being the molar mass 226.05, which has a half-life of 1599 years.
The discovery of radium made this element to be more studied and used in the discovery of new atomic theories.

Discovered through uranium ores, pitchblende, which was made available to the Curies by the government for the study of radioactivity. And so they discovered polonium, which is 400 times more radioactive than uranium, through its isolation. Therefore, the name of the element was given in honor of the birthplace of Marie, as she was born in Poland.
The occurrence of polonium in the earth's crust is 2x10-10 mg/kg and in the sea 1.5x10-14 mg/L. Also, the presence of polonium-210 in river waters comes from the atmospheric deposition of radionuclides (unstable nuclide which, therefore, degenerates emitting ionizing radiation)

This is done by an atomic nucleus that, for some reason, is unstable; it "wants" to give up some energy in order to shift to a more stable configuration. During the first half of the twentieth century, much of modern physics was devoted to exploring why this happens, with the result that nuclear decay was fairly well understood by 1960.

As its name implies, radioactivity is the act of emitting radiation spontaneously. Too many neutrons in a nucleus lead it to emit a negative beta particle, which changes one of the neutrons into a proton. Too many protons in a nucleus lead it to emit a positron (positively charged electron), changing a proton into a neutron. Too much energy leads a nucleus to emit a gamma ray, which discards great energy without changing any of the particles in the nucleus. Too much mass leads a nucleus to emit an alpha particle, discarding four heavy particles (two protons and two neutrons).
