This is a painting done by the late William Charles Utermohlen (December 5, 1933 – March 21, 2007). He was an American figurative artist known for his late-period self potraits completed after his 1995 diagnosis of probable Alzheimer's disease.

These collection of paintings appeal to me because it allows me to see a visual representation of forgetting one's own reflection which serves as a powerful metaphor, reminding us of the devastating toll dementia takes on personal identity. It allows me to undertsand the profound loss and isolation experienced by individuals grappling with the disease. Witnessing the artist's journey through these paintings, we can
confront the harsh reality of dementia, recognizing its potential to erode our most fundamental sense of self.

This art piece is called “Bull’s head”. It was created from a bicycle seat and handlebar by Pablo Picasso in 1942. Picasso made this piece of artwork by welding an old bicycle seat and a rusty set of handlebars found in a pile of objects.

This art piece appeals to me because this is a creative way of assembling a bicycle seat and handlebar. A small child probably could have put it together. However, it is the idea of assembling the parts in this particular manner, seeing the items beyond their conventional functions, that contributes to the value of this sculpture. This sculpture shocks me because it looks like a sculpture that can be easily constructed but not everyone can have the innovative idea to put this seemingly simple art piece together. Although this art piece require little technical skills, it shows the transforming power of the human imagination.

This painting is a snapshot of the bustling canteen on a construction site and has a nationalistic and representational style that creates a scattering rhythm visually, alluding to the hurriedness of the workers. The artwork is particularly alluring due to its visual depth as shown by the rows of tables from the bottom right in the foreground all the way to the top right fading into background, and its disorganised visual elements represent the crowded and noisy atmosphere of the scene. Chua's ingenious use of perspective renders the painting as if the viewers are amongst the crowd, bringing connection and relatability between the viewers and workers. The painting depicts Jurong shipyards during a time when Singapore was facing rapid development in economics, housing, trading and commerce. This painting appeals to me because it sheds light on the role of construction workers by illustrating a scene from their lunch break instead of just emphasising their harsh labour. Hence, it stops the viewer from just admiring them for their sacrifices, but also realising their identity is similar to ours.

"The Persistence of Memory" is a renowned painting created by the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí in 1931. It depicts a desolate landscape with surreal elements, including melting clocks draped over branches and a distorted, dreamlike figure in the foreground.

The painting's appeal lies in its ability to challenge our perception of reality and time. The melting clocks symbolise the fluidity and subjectivity of time, suggesting that it can be manipulated and distorted in our subconscious minds. The barren landscape creates a sense of isolation and timelessness, adding to the overall eerie atmosphere.

I believe that The Persistence of Memory" by Salvador Dalí is a multi-layered painting that aims to explore the transience of existence and the subjective nature of time. Through the melting clocks, Dalí challenges our rigid perceptions of time, urging us to embrace the idea of time as a malleable and subjective experience. The distorted figure in the foreground represents the blurred boundaries between the conscious and subconscious mind, emphasising the influence of dreams, desires, and fears on our perception of reality. This enigmatic and thought-provoking artwork not only captivates me, but also challenges the conventional notions of time, reality, and identity. Its unique imagery and symbolism invite us to delve into our own subconscious realms, sparking discussions about the nature of existence and the power of imagination.

After all, “Time is a stubborn illusion, and we humans, are the magicians”

"The Scream" is an iconic painting created by the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch in 1893. It has captivated audiences for over a century and continues to be one of the most famous and recognizable artworks in the world. I find this appealing as it portrays expressive emotion. Specifically, "The Scream" is renowned for its vivid depiction of intense human emotion. The central figure, with its mouth open in a silent scream and its distorted features, evokes a profound sense of anxiety, fear, and existential dread. This emotional intensity resonates with people on a deep, visceral level, tapping into universal human experiences and fears.

"The Persistence of Chaos" is a functioning laptop infected with six of the most destructive computer viruses in history, including WannaCry and Mydoom. The laptop is encased in a glass box, emphasizing its significance as an artwork rather than a practical device. This piece appeals to me for the following reasons:

Thought-Provoking Concept: The artwork raises questions about the fragility of our digital systems and the potential consequences of cyberattacks. It highlights the vulnerability of our interconnected world and the chaos that can result from malicious intent.

Blurring of boundaries of art: By transforming a functional object into a work of art, "The Persistence of Chaos" challenges traditional notions of what constitutes art. It blurs the line between the physical and digital realms, creating a captivating juxtaposition.

Symbolism: Each virus included in the laptop represents a significant moment in the history of cybercrime. This symbolism serves as a reminder of the real-world implications and the potential harm caused by such threats.

Relevance: As technology continues to advance, cybersecurity concerns become increasingly relevant. "The Persistence of Chaos" serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks and the need for good security measures in our digital age.

"The Persistence of Chaos" makes me contemplate the implications of our digital vulnerabilities while appreciating its artistic expression in an increasingly technologically driven world.

The Palau de la Música Catalana is an extravagant concert hall in Barcelona, Spain. Its crowning jewel is the stained glass skylight designed by Antoni Rigalt in the auditorium, which is intended to resemble a blue sky with a sun in the center. Due to its massive size and translucence, the Palau de la Música Catalana is the only concert hall in Europe that is illuminated by natural light during daytime.

This piece of art appeals to me as I found the vibrant colours of the stained glass window to be very aesthetically pleasing. Not only does the skylight looks good with all its intricate details, it is also built for functionality, allowing for natural lighting to enter the hall. Not to mention how difficult it is to make stained glass windows, and how difficult it would’ve been to install it on the roof with the technology at the beginning of the 20th century. How this art piece managed to pull off functionality and form amazes me. Honestly, the entire Palau de la Música Catalana is a work of art full of sculptures and historical value.

I like that the colours are simple just blue on white paper. The thickness of the different lines is interesting because they come together to make an image. Also, these lines were not painted directly, instead, the background is blue and the whites are what make the painting.
The candle brings an image of hope as the candle (the subject) shines its light brightly. This iconic painting captures the beauty and tranquility of a starry night sky, but it also conveys a sense of depth and emotion that resonates with me. Previously before this art piece, Monet was not well recognized but after this exhibition with this piece, he gained a reputation as the foremost landscape painter of the group. It depicts one of the many gardens planted by Monet from his point of view. The little boy in garden is Monet's son and the people on the steps behind are other members of his extended household. The inclusion of his family in his artwork shows his equal love for both gardening and his family. I appreciate the exquisite details of his work which showcase the beauty of the flora and fauna of the garden. The colour palette is light and not contrasting, capturing the happiness of the moment. Most of all, I like the painting as it shows me a different life that I could have lived had I not lived in Singapore.

The exhibition takes the viewer into an extraordinary world of beautifully bizarre hybrids and strange beings. Her artworks are surreal, magical and prompt us to question the connections between humans, animals, plants and other living creatures, and think about the common traits we share. The exhibition also shines a light on the possibilities that genetic engineering could bring, and focuses on the analysis of the behaviours of both humans and animals.

Campbell’s Soup Cans is just one in a series of paintings Andy Warhol made so incredibly famous through his use of the company’s branding. Painted by hand, with the use of stencils, closer inspection reveals that these cans are not identical in appearance or spacing. Each can represents one of the 32 flavors that Campbell’s had on offer in 1962. As a pop artist, Warhol became interested in the machine-like processes involved in mass production of such things as the Campbell’s soup can itself. In the climate in which Warhol was producing these works, the American public was becoming more and more reliant on mass-production. For Warhol, this would lead to society’s ultimately becoming more depersonalized and homogenous. Warhol saw the connection to the mechanical and the awareness of advertising, design, branding and mass production that the middle class was engaged in

I like it as it is drawn by my favourite artist and it shoes the future of mass productions

The title of the artwork is derived from the artist’s decision to assign only numbers, not full titles, to his works. This was representative of the artist’s drive to ensure that his work spoke for itself, rather than be judged by its ability to meet the expectations conjured by a title.

The fluidity of the artwork’s lines and forms shows the manner in which the artist worked. A jazz enthusiast, the artist would play jazz records while working, the music allowing him to create movements that would allow the application of paint in an organised manner.

With the artist’s technique of dripping and pouring paint onto the canvas, he was able to achieve a more immediate means of creating art, the paint flowing from his tool onto the canvas. By defying the convention of painting on an upright surface, he added a new dimension by being able to view and apply paint to his canvases from all directions.
