Jim Crow was a fictional character and persona for theater and entertainment created by Thomas D. Rice; an ethnic depiction in accordance with what most caucasians at the time viewed african americans. He was used to create entertainment in minstrel shows. Click here to see a depiction of him (warning: highly racist and quite offensive, it is also performed by a white man wearing black face)----> https://youtu.be/ALTam2L9NhE

It was a debate and landmark decision of the US Supreme Court issued in 1896, setting back civil rights in the U.S. for decades, making the concept "separate but equal". It was started by Homer Plessy, who was told to move from his seat on his train because of his black descent. He was arrested for not complying and he fought against Louisiana state, saying the segregation laws were hurting and didn't comply with the 14th and 13th amendment. A judge for Louisiana named Ferguson who believed segregation was constitutional was the one who fought against him in court.
