A huge benefit of collaboration in math is the ability to share ideas about how to approach the problem.

One drawback may be some students dominating the groups or putting others down. Setting group norms (such as respecting others, a token economy to allow for everyone’s opinions, etc.) would help mitigate potential group issues.

One way to foster collaboration in math that I have used with the 5th grade class I am placed in would be the use of whole group math activities like a 5-a-day. We call on students through equity sticks to answer the questions on the whiteboard and then work through the problems together. This works a lot like my favorite no, when it comes to incorrect answers. This showcases the different mehtods that the kids use to come up with their answers. It also helps pinpoint where mistakes are made, so that they can be addressed or retaught if needed.

Another collaborative group activity that’s is great for math is called super hero corners. This is when the students go to four of the super hero corners and they discuss different ways on how to solve the math problem. This is great way to get students to collaborate, become problem solvers, innovators, and improve their critical thinking skills. You can also alter the super heroe corners based on your students needs.
