Mini-Lesson
A mini-lesson is typically a 5-10 minute lesson that is taught to the whole class, small groups, or individual students. In this mini-lesson, the teacher's goal is to provide extra instruction that is focused on the needs of the students. In a mini-lesson, the teacher will focus on one specific skill. Sometimes teachers will use their own writing as a tool to demonstrate the skill they are focusing on in that particular mini-lesson. These mini-lessons usually precede the student's independent writing time.

Writing Time
This is the largest duration of time during a Writer's Workshop. During this time, students will be working individually on their writing piece. All students may be working on a different project based on their different academic levels. While the students are working, the teacher will be writing themselves or conferencing with the students. The conference allows the teacher to understand the student better as a writer and structure future mini-lessons to focus on skills that these students need to work on. The teacher will also focus on one aspect of the student's writing and provide constructive criticism on how they can improve it.

Read Aloud
During a mini-lesson, the teacher will sometimes read something called a mentor text. A mentor text is a book the teacher will read that provides examples of the topic that will be taught during a mini-lesson. The mentor text allows the teacher to engage the student while teaching writing skills. Students learn that writing does not need to be a certain way. Each piece of writing is different depending on the subject and type of writing. The teacher can teach this to students through reading aloud mentor texts.

Sharing
Students will have the opportunity to share their work if they would like to. Students will have already learned the importance of encouraging their peers and how to provide constructive criticism. The teacher will use this time to implement constructive criticism. Sharing in front of an audience provides the student with an opportunity to learn how to speak clearly, use eye contact, and be confident when speaking.

Students have the chance to work together with students who are stronger in writing. For English Language Learners, teachers should provide time for students to write in their first language and write about their culture. Also, these students can be paired with someone who is a strong English speaker. Students can share and write about what means a great deal to them, which gives them the choice of what to write about. Giving students the opportunity to draw a picture first or along with writing, will give them the chance to feel more comfortable in their writing process.
