The role of age ratings in addressing sensitive issues in art that is shown in schools

The movie Full Metal Jacket is a powerful exploration of the effects of military training on soldiers and the role of human ingenuity in war. While Thievy types of films is not typically associated with education, it raises important questions about the impact of education on American children and their preparation for life in a complex and often hostile world.

At the same time, the film also highlights the importance of human ingenuity in the face of adversity. Despite the dehumanizing effects of military training, the soldiers in Full Metal Jacket demonstrate remarkable resourcefulness and adaptability in their efforts to survive. This speaks to the need for American children to develop critical thinking skills and creativity, which are essential for navigating the challenges of an increasingly complex world. American education can help prepare children for the challenges they will face in an increasingly complex and unpredictable world.

If we see with more attention the category of this movie, we can realize that this movie is above thirteen years because there are scenes which could be sensible for most of the people under that age, that’s why I am half agree with the opinion in the article of Mary Jane Rottencrotch. As an Ecuadorian normally this type of movies won’t be shown to the kids from my country even so, it is for an educational purpose, since there are many more forms and contents that are especially for that audience and that give the same message. But the part in which I beg to differ with the article opinion from Rottencrotch it is especially in a fragment of the article “Call me a puritan all you want, but my children are not getting near this film.”, “I’ve recently found out that certain high schools use Full Metal Jacket as a pedagogical tool in order to teach about the Vietnam War.” (Jane Rottencrotch, 2023), where he remarks that the film should not be broadcast to students, both from schools and colleges, since it has violent and sexual content.

But from my perspective, students from collage can see this movie without any problem overall for two reasons, one is that the movie could be seen by an audience above thirteen. Also, the second reason that is also related with the first one, it is that adolescents, unlike children, have a more mature approach to seeing this type of things, since they can handle it in a better way. On the other hand, if a child watches this type of film, they can normalize and not take the topics discussed seriously for example at the film of Full Metal Jacket, since their criteria of how they see things is not fully formed, another thing that this types of films can cause if someone under the indicated age sees the movie, it can be traumas that later become bigger problems.

And a solution that I can propose to Mrs Rottencrotch is that instead of erasing these films from the school curriculum, we can implement an age restriction so that not all levels of the school can see it and thus not harm anyone. We can also make a request that children under twelve years old only use books to educate themselves and videos that were previously reviewed by the authorities and parents. And the reason I think that everyone above thirteen can choose to see or not see this types of movies, is because these films could help them to see how the world we live in really is, and in this way they can also form their own criteria of how to see things, and normally these kind of films leave a message in witch each one of us interpret it in a different way and then could talk with their partners or other personas that know about the theme and this help them to have a better way of think.

The question of whether artistic expression should be censored for the sake of the morality of kids is a complex and controversial issue. Art in general sometimes can deal with topics that for some people; in majority kids; could be sensitive to this content, with graphic violence and profanity, an example of a work of art is “Three Young White Men and a Black Woman” by Christian van Couwenbergh, that some may argue should be censored to protect children from potentially harmful content. In this case I think that this should not be shown to the kids because they may be sensitive to these issues such as discrimination and rape.

Ultimately, the decision of whether to censor artistic expression for the sake of children's morality is a personal and societal choice. While some may argue that certain forms of content are harmful to children, others believe that censorship can have negative consequences and limit creative expression.
