This cognitive dissonance between his beliefs and actions should make him question his own moral code, and if doing so violates the moral standard he is setting for others. I would choose thievery over death. Of course that comes with conditions. I would only steal from people that could maintain a suitable lifestyle should I steal something from them. I would steal some bread from a bakery if I would starve without it and the owner would not stand to make a huge loss from it. Whereas I would not steal a piece of bread from a poor beggar who would likely have no food if I were to take his bread. His view of human behavior would be viewed negatively by most people as they don't want to believe that we are a selfish species. Looking through the lense of an animal can however show us how we tend to help ourselves first and hurt others in the process. It was interesting to see how little the family cared for the cat and yet would not permanently get rid of him. 
If I were a cat I would probably describe the world as big, scary and unforgiving.
