This was the oldest invention more like a theodolite, since it had as a base a U-tube, which served to horizontalize the platform, in fact the term diopters is sometimes used in ancient texts as synonymous with theodolite."Before the theodolite, instruments such as geometric circles and graduated, square and several semicircles were used to obtain any number of measurements of vertical or horizontal angles, it was only a matter of time before someone put two measuring devices in a single instrument that I could measure both angles at the same time.The first instrument more similar to a true theodolite was probably built by Joshua Habermel in Germany in 1576, being complemented with the compass and the tripod.The theodolite became a modern instrument, accurate in 1787 with the introduction of Jesse Ramsden's famous large theodolite, which he created using a very precise division engine of his own design. The demand could not be met by foreign theodolites due to its lack of precision, therefore, all instruments that meet the requirements of precision were made in England. Despite the many German instrument makers at the turn of the century, there were no usable German theodolites available. A transition was produced by Breithaupt and the symbiosis of Utzschneider, Reichenbach and Fraunhofer.
