They had fought 7 different wars between 1820 and 1866. It's navy played a big part in the war.

from reaching Europe. This would provide a huge advantage to their ally Germany on the Western Front. However, due to various reasons, Italy didn't want to help Austria, prompting Austria to try the plan on its on.

In the first few weeks of the war, the French launched a massive attack to try and break the blockade. However, all they accomplished was the sinking of a small cruiser called the Zenta.

It was only after a U-12 nearly sank France's most powerful battleship: Jean Bart that people really started to see how powerful submarines were. This incident also taught France to be more careful, which caused the end of battleship use in the Adriatic Sea.

He sank 14 different vessels or essentially 61,328 tons of shipping. One of the vessels that he sank was the French Cruiser: Léon Gambetta. He even had a movie about him made called The Sound of Music.

They believed this because both countries had invested a lot in their navies. However, the war didn't go the way they thought.

However, the Entente navies had suffered much bigger losses. They had lost 1 dreadnought, 2 predreadnoughts, 6 cruisers, 5 destroyers, and 11 submarines. But despite gaining the advantage,  Austria-Hungary would still go on to lose the war.

However, just like the French they were stopped by Austria Hungary's submarines which sank 2 Italian cruisers, the Garibaldi and the Amalfi. Thy also damaged a British cruiser, the Dublin.

This was due to the fact that the Otranto Strait was  the only way for German submarines to enter the Mediterranean's open waters and come help Austria-Hungary.
