The poem Beach Day from the book "Can I Touch Your Hair?" by Irene Latham and Charles Waters is about a boy who visits the beach and feels frustrated that other people seem to be mocking him. I think that the theme of this poem is to treat people with kindness. The speaker says, "Why do people who want to look like me hate me so much?" he also said, "I feel fury rising inside me, as if I'm a tidal wave about to crash". This tell me that the boy feels like the other kids at the beach are mocking him for how he looks and that makes him very angry. The boy wishes that the other kids would just be nice to him.

In the poem "Playground", Irene feels left out when Shonda doesn't invite her to play. In the poem "Fresh Start", Charles feels hurt when his "friends" J.R. and Nicholas tell him to "stay away". In the end, Charles and Irene decide to work together on their class writing project instead.

The poem “Ruby Showed The Way” by Carol Oaks is about a young 6 year-old named Ruby Bridges coming to an all white school as a black child. All the kids and the parents ok the kids got frusterated and took their kids out of school. i think the theme of Ruby Showed the Way is dont judge people based on their skin/race. The text says “She went to school on her own, the kids all left, she was alone” and “Ruby makes her country proud”
