Sustainable tourism is referring to three parts including social, economy, and environment aspect. Furthermore, sustainable tourism is a long term and even never ending process with many steps, which means that with the sustainable development , it can meet the need of both present and next generations. And also , it can keep the balance among the tourism stakeholders especially the tourists, the tourism industry and local community.

However, form the scope of sustainable tourism, it covers a lot of area such as pollution , resource use, wildlife, and etc. And as for the operator, some of them recognize the sustainability as a concern or are ignorant about the terminology. So as we know that the first time put forward in sustainability is at 1969 but until now it is a major issue. So it is hard to conduct in a meaningful ,effective way.

Bigger is not always better. Instead of creating a lot of indicators, the policy maker and researchers should pay attention on smaller sets of items. Therefore, in this article, the research using the method of meta-analysis through previous researches so that to figure out what are the key indicators and whether it contribute into achieving the sustainable tourism.

Based on my understanding, because the masses of indicators or principles do not help a lot in conducting the sustainable tourism project. On the one hand, the operators may have enough ability to choose the right option according the real situation. It is more likely to obfuscate people than enlighten them. On the other hand, when take actions on sustainable tourism development, it takes a lot of cost including time, fund, energy, and etc. However, as for the enterprises level , it is tough to do two or more things at once. For instance, some hotel with little fund can not update the high-technology green machine such as solar system, which contributing on minimize the negative impacts on environment.

What is more, people are more likely to choose the dimensions or indicators which is familiar with and is easy to act. However, it is essential to explore the actual conditions. For instance, unlike the effect of economic sustainability is significant and quick, the outcome of the social or cultural aspects are minimal and unconspicuous. So the operators or bosses who are less responsible of environmental sustainability may not take action on it. However, only focus on any one part of dimension may lose way of achieving long term sustainable development.

Based on my understanding, simplicity is the key. What we should next is to identify and clarify all the indicators and separate into core parts and peripheral parts. We need to get the principal contradiction of the main issues. For instance, during a period, there is a shortage of electricity, which means fewer electricity quotas, and in order to sustainably develop, hotels must take steps to arrange the electricity quantities. What is more, it also depend on the current policy and all the enterprises should follow it. For example , the national policy about guiding the way to promote the sustainable development which is made though careful considerations and research. It means all industries including tourism industry should work out together.

Even though great and continous efforts have been made to achieve sustainability in tourism, there are issues to slow down the progress such as long time required, difficulty to measure sustainability in some dimensions and too many indicators . There are consequences due to broad and comprehensive indicators to measure sustainability: inaction; poor decision-making; adoption of the easiest option; choosing options only based on one’s own interest. Therefore, the quality of indicators prevails over their quantity. Instead of drafting a long list of indicators, it is more feasible to choose a smaller set of core items to measure sustainability and operationalize in a meaningful way, following the principle of adoptability, applicability, and effectiveness.

The main purpose of this article is mentioning and evaluating number of studies that dealt with sustainable tourism indicators from 2000 to 2015 and see if we really achieved sustainable tourism or not. Then, it mentioned seven key indicator’s themes used in evaluating and they are: job creation, business viability, quality of life, water quality, waste management, energy conservation and maintenance of community integrity.

A meta-analysis of 27 studies published between 2000 and 2015 that presented sustainable tourism dimensions and indicator themes is being conducted.

There are two parts to the Findings section.

Sustainable tourism development is a long process that requires the joint efforts of enterprises, governments and tourists. The key path to sustainable tourism is to develop core indicators, because we need indicators to highlight issues, indicate trends, help policy development, and assess and monitor processes, and we need core indicators to identify priorities and make sustainability orderly. For instance, during a period, there is a shortage of electricity, which means fewer electricity quotas, and in order to sustainability develop, hotels must take steps to arrange the electricity quantities. It is important to note that choice overload is a key issue, as there are too many indicators and options for sustainability, too broad, and no clear distinction between core and peripheral indicators, many companies make inappropriate choices or avoid responsibility due to profit-driven initiatives. In short, bigger is not better.
Cultural sustainability indicators are related to the maintenance of cultural integrity.

It is important to note that these indicators are to be characterized by assessability, so that companies can easily measure their current status and progress toward their goals.

Most indicators can be implemented and evaluated at the enterprise level, and operators have direct control over some indicators, such as control of water pollution, energy waste, waste emissions, sex tourism, etc. There are also many indicators that require action by governments and visitors, calling on businesses to act together to have an impact on their communities.

So what we should do is stop constantly creating new indicators. Identify a set of smaller, more actionable, and manageable core indicators of sustainable tourism.
