Max Kane " Mighty" is a troubled kid who witnessed his mother’s murder. Max befriends the physically disabled Kevin.
Kevin Avery "Freak" is a boy who has to wear leg braces. His intellect pairs well with Max’s strength.
Kenny Kane is Max’s father. Kenny murdered Max’s mother when Max was just a child, and he later kidnaps Max.
Loretta Lee is the owner of the purse that Max and Kevin retrieve, and she later attempts to help Max when his father kidnaps him.
Grim is Max's grandfather who he lives with after his mother was murdered. He sees similarities between Max and his father Kenny Kane, that are more than just physical attributes.
Gram is Max's grandmother who loves him dearly and is always worried for Max.
Iggy Lee is Loretta Lee’s husband and former friend of Kenny Kane.
Gwen Avery is Kevin’s mother and a childhood friend of Max’s mother, Annie.

The story is narrated by Max. The story starts with him in daycare where he first meets Kevin aka Freak. Kevin refers to himself as "Robot Man" and uses crutches to get around. Their time in kindergarten is short because Max does not come back for a while. The story then picks up with the two in 8th grade. Max tells the readers that he has a learning disability. One day Max is in his backyard and sees a woman moving things into the house down the street, it is Kevin's mom. Max goes down to Kevin's house out of curiosity, and Kevin asks himself to identify himself. Max runs back home into his basement. Later that day Max see's Kevin trying to retrieve something stuck high in a tree and helps him get it down. The two spend the day together as the first day of their friendship.

The two attend a 4th of July party at the Milipond, where they have a run-in with a bully named Blade. It ends with the police showing up to rescue the two boys from the pond after they were getting rocks hurled at them by Blade. One of the police officers recognizes Max as the son of someone they call "Killer Kane" and asks if his father is still in prison. Max doesn't let him finish and responds with "We're Freak the Mighty, that's who we are." The two boys spend the rest of the summer together going on quests and exploring their imaginations. The two boys go out on a nighttime quest to find a purse that Blade and his gang stole and then threw down a storm drain. When they find the purse it has an I.D. in it that belongs to Loretta Lee. They return the purse and Loretta and her husband Iggy both know of Max's father, and they kick the boys out.

Max's father reaches out to have him write a letter to the parole board, this is followed by a panic attack where Max also has a health scare. Close to Christmas, Grim (Max's Grandmother) tells Max that his father "Killer Kane" is out on parole. Late on Christmas Eve Max's father breaks into the house to kidnap Max. His father takes him to an abandoned building where he ties up Max.

Freak appears with a squirt gun filled with acid and sprays Max's father in the eyes and the two escape. The police say that Freak saved Max's life.

Later on, the boys are celebrating Freak's thirteenth birthday, when Freak has a seizure and is rushed to the hospital. Max goes to visit Freak where he learns that Freak is not going to be coming home anytime soon. Max receives a blood bank as a gift and Freak tells him to write the story of "Freak the Mighty" in it. Freak passes away soon after.

This book was an amazing read filled with a rollercoaster of emotions. This book was not only thrilling and sad but also told an amazing story with plenty of life lessons. It opened my eyes to how important relationships are for students with learning disabilities and physical differences. Both of the boys needed a friend and as their relationship grew so did their confidence. I would recommend everyone to read this book, even if they aren't pursuing education. This book also made me dig up some old memories of the friends I met throughout my childhood. These relationships shaped me into the man I am today. This book showed me the importance of relationships not only for students with learning disabilities but all people.
