The Compromise put an end to the slave trade in Washington DC and the Fugitive Slave Act was amended. The compromise made it so that slave hunters could enter free states to retrieve escaped slaves. The South believed they could take their slaves and settle anywhere. California was a free state and sided with the North which showed most of the North's view. People involved were; Henry Clay, Stephan Douglas, and Daniel Webster.

A book published in 1851 telling the story of "Uncle Tom"; an enslaved man mourning over family he was forced to leave and the life as a slave. It sold wildly throughout Britain, opening their eyes and the eyes of people in the North. The South claimed that it was dramaticized. Which created tension on both sides. This book helped lay ground for the Civil War. The writer was Harriet Beecher Stowe.

This was the period of repeated outbreaks of violent fights between pro-slavery and anti-slavery forces. The territory gained the nickname "Bleeding Kansas" due to the high death tolls. The North and South both wanted the land for themselves and because of ongoing beliefs, they still argued over the North's hatred of slavery and the South's want for it. This began the anger of John Brown. Three years later, the Dred Scott Decision arrived. The country struggled to understand the implications of popular sovereignty in the West and how it would all be settled. (free or slave) People involved include; James Buchanan, Stephen Douglas, John Fremont.

A supreme court ruling in 1857 based around Dred Scott. The Supreme Court ended up deciding that Dred Scott would not get freedom. The decision argued that slaves were property. Northern States wanted to stop the spread of slavery. Southern states believed that the US Government did not have the right to decide if slavery should be allowed. This decision led to the debate between Lincoln and Douglas. Lincoln asked Douglas to reconcile the Supreme Court's decision on the case which led to their debates. People involved were; Dred Scott, James Buchanan, and the Supreme Court.

Abraham Lincoln and Stephan Douglas had a series of 7 debates in 1858. They debated over the issue of slavery extension into the territories. Northerners went to support Douglas because of how he appeased the North but they stayed with their anti-slavery views. Douglas did not alienate the South. Douglas went on to win the debates. Douglas did not consider slavery a moral issue which would later cause raids and Lincoln to ultimately win the election.

John Brown was an abolitionist who led a small group in a raid to attempt to start an armed revolt of enslaved people and abolish slavery. No slaves ended up joining. Southerner states passed laws to prevent slave rebellions. It was their worst nightmare. Anti-slavery Northerners did consider Brown a martyr and a folk hero. The raid raised issues for the presidential election. Some states created harsher slave laws. The raid inflamed tensions and made it impossible for the North and South to agree. People involved were John Brown and his soldiers.

Abraham Lincoln was elected the 16th president and was the first Republican to win presidency. Lincoln's victory caused states to secede from the Union. The South rebelled after the win. They feared he would abolish slavery so they seceded from the Union. Most Northerners preferred Lincoln's views. Lincoln's primary goal was to save the union and then deal with slavery because he refused to let it expand. It all led to the Civil War. People involved were Abraham Lincoln, Stephan Douglas, John Beckenridge, and John Bell.
