Students working in math groups can demonstrate understanding of language and content standards across disciplines

Math Example:
In groups students who have been working on the distributive property of multiplication are given a table with information and answer the prompt, Forty people on the Chicago tour go on the bus tour of Chinatown. How much does it cost in all? Use place value, the Distributive Property, or a number line to solve. Explain your answer and show your work in a chart. Present your understandings by explaining your strategy, reason you chose the strategy and how it relates to what the problem is asking.

Students work in groups to read the graph together. They decide what information is important, how they will use it and solve in presentations of their strategies. This task requires the use of academic specific language along with an explanation of language objectives as related to the content learned. Educators can use this performance assessment to judge what misconceptions students have and whether reteaching or enrichment are needed.
