With the positive wording of the poem circulating around the idea of loving yourself, the theme this story gravitates towards is the importance of self-confidence. It can be grasped that the central idea of this poem surrounds itself in is being prideful, such as examples where Walt Whitman references himself to "celebrate myself, I sing myself." (1) This opening quote portrays this individual to be finding his true identity, fully enhancing the relationship he connects himself with being overly optimistic. Not only does the poet mention his high self esteem, but a connection with nature is also noted. A vivid description of Walt Whitman "observing a spear of summer grass" (5), recognizes the significance of nature elements. The overall cheery situations the poet provides hint at the themes of celebrating humanity, yourself, and the universe as a whole.

Question #1. What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic? Violet Le

Throughout the poem, the author employs a tranquil and optimistic tone which is strengthened by the diction of Whitman. For instance, in line 4 of the poem, the speaker declares, “I loafe and invite my soul.” The diction utilized such as “loafe” and “invite” give off a relaxed tone, which adds to the uplifting spirit of the poem. This first line also sets the standard of the poem's tone as a positive poem rather than one of sorrow. The poem does not show any instances of irony, as the author focuses more on delivering a heartwarming message.

An amount of figurative language to describe Walt Whitman's idea of supporting one's identity are shown to be employed in this poem, as he utilizes phrases that include alliteration and metaphors. From the opening sequence, a sound device can be present from when he describes to "celebrate myself, and sing myself", (1) with the double use of myself exhibiting alliteration. The poet's buoyant attitude in fulfilling your life is also expressed in metaphors, as he "loafe and invite my soul." (4) By referencing to his soul, it suggests to tending his spiritual mind and physical health. These terms used to add to Whitman's self-respect also indicate the overall relaxing aspects, expounding to the plain vocabulary to create a calming mood.

Question #5. Are there any symbols? What do they mean? Are they universal symbols or do they arise from the context of this poem? Violet Le

In the poem, the author draws on the symbol of grass to represent the elements of nature and unity. For example in lines 5-6, the speaker claims, "I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass. My tongue, every atom of my blood, form'd from this soil, this air..." Here, the author speaks about how he is made from the Earth, and how everything is interconnected. Similarly to grass that shares the same soil, and work together in unison, the speaker states that he, and by extension us, are made of the same materials down to the molecular levels. This promotes the symbolic meaning of unity, as similar to grass, we are all formed from the same roots, or "soil." Not only this, but grass is generally associated with the idea of nature, and by promoting that we are made up of the organic materials around us, the author utilizes grass as a symbol for nature, and how we fit into the world. Grass is not generally seen as a universal symbol, and more of arises from the context of the poem.
