In the article, School Counseling and Social Emotional Learning Programs, Helena Stevens explains the role of school counselors and the importance of social emotional learning plans. Stevens (2021) explains “School counselors implement social emotional learning (SEL) programs at individual, small group, and school-wide levels to help students thrive, socially, emotionally, and academically”. Stevens (2021) also states that SEL programs enhance the school climate and emotional well-being of the students. Another important concept Stevens (2021) presents is how school counselors must take a holistic approach by understanding factors that may aid or hinder the positive outcomes of SEL programs.

I enjoyed this article because with the 32 pages of information I feel it was quite concise in explaining school counselors’ roles, how to effectively create and implement a successful SEL program, and to consider issues that may arise within the program. I felt Stevens wrote a thorough article that considered many challenges school counselors face and also how SEL programs can be implemented successfully.

My Vision as a School Counselor

Schenck, et.al (2011) state, Fitch, in 1936, described counselors as the handy men in schools doing jobs that no one else had time to accomplish. My vision as a school counselor is to be a reliable and compassionate resource for students, faculty, and parents. I strive to create a safe and supportive environment where students can explore their talents, overcome challenges, and achieve their full potential. I aim to provide guidance and encouragement to help students navigate academic, personal, and emotional difficulties. Additionally, I believe in promoting inclusivity, diversity, and a positive school culture. By working collaboratively with students, parents, and teachers, I hope to contribute to the overall well-being and success of the school community.
