The heads of the house holds who are usually the husbands are the ones to pick slip out of a black box which represents the tradition the village has. After the heads of the households pick a slip of paper. After whoever has the black dot which represents death is the one whose family then has to be chosen. The director of the lottery who is Mr. Summers then takes the piece of paper with the black dot and puts it back in the box. He then takes the amount of slips of paper as other family members. Tessie is against The Lottery when she is picked in the story and starts complaining that her husband didn't get enough time to pick and that he was rushed. Although everyone took the same chance she didn't want anyone in her family to die. Katness is in district 12 and everyone is waiting for someone to get picked sadly her sister is picked but Katness can't let that happen so Katness volunteers to take her place. Her sister is heart broken and so is Katness's mother but Katness does what is right for her sister.
