The Space Race was a 20th-century competition between two Cold War adversaries, the Soviet Union and the United States, to achieve superior spaceflight capability.
The space race was considered important because it showed the world which country had the best scientific, technological and economic system. After World War II, both the United States and the Soviet Union realized how important rocket research would become for the military.

The Soviet Union achieved a clear triumph in the Space Race. Aboard the Vostok 1, Yuri Gagarin makes a single orbit around the Earth and becomes the first man to reach space. He remained in space for one hour and forty-eight minutes before landing in Saratov Oblast, west Russia. This created intense fear and anxiety among the US public that the Soviet Union had surpassed the technological achievements of the United States. Kennedy began a dramatic expansion of the U.S. space program and committed the nation to the ambitious goal of landing a man on the Moon by the end of the decade.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), is an independent U.S. governmental agency established in 1958 for the research and development of vehicles and activities for the exploration of space within and outside Earth's atmosphere. The corporation addresses the challenges related to human space exploration by expanding technology, creating new industries, and helping to foster a peaceful connection with other nations.

Why was president Kennedy’s proclamation of getting a man to the moon so important? What does this have to do with project Apollo?

The essential purpose of President Kennedy's promise to land a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s was to restore American prestige in the space race damaged by the Soviet's Sputnik.
He wanted to announce a program that the U.S. had a strong chance of achieving before the Soviet Union. Kennedy concluded that landing an American on the Moon would be a very challenging technological feat, but an area of space exploration in which the U.S. actually had a potential lead. The decision involved much consideration before making it public, as well as enormous human efforts and expenditures to make what became Project Apollo a reality by 1969.

With no official measure of success, the winner of the Space Race is a point of controversy. Most historians agree that by landing on the moon, the United States effectively “won” the space race that had begun with Sputnik's launch in 1957. For their part, the Soviets made four failed attempts to launch a lunar landing craft between 1969 and 1972. While the US set a man on the Moon first, their success was fed by a series of pioneering achievements by the Soviet Union. The Space Race can be seen as a climactic comeback for the United States rather than a decisive victory.

The Earth is now surrounded by a vast network of satellites, which provide continuous broadband communications and high-definition television, data used for weather reporting, navigation and positioning, and more.

The global positioning system (GPS) was originally developed by the military for precision navigation and weapon targeting purposes. Currently, GPS technology has transformed almost every industry, as well as day-to-day life, on a global scale. Using maps and travel atlases and stopping to ask for directions are now largely anachronisms. GPS has enabled ride-hailing services, as well as package tracking and delivery.

Nasa led the way in robotics to remotely control space vehicles, and this technology has been successfully adapted to create more functionally dynamic artificial limbs, known in the medical world as prosthetics. Another Nasa invention – memory foam – has also been used to mold coverings and give the natural look and feel of flesh!
