Although Vianne was angry that her sister decided to threaten her life and the lives of her children, she knew that she couldn't let her sister die over trying to save someone else's life. Throughout the novel, Vianne and Isabelle fight constantly, but only out of sisterly love. Vianne always thinks that removing Isabelle from her life is the best way to stay safe, but she always regrets it because she wants to know if her sister is safe. When Beck went into the barn, Vianne knew that Isabelle was going to die if she didn't do anything, so out of desperation, she decided that the only way to save Isabelle was to kill Beck.

In this specific part of the novel, both a powerless and powerful character are affected by the war. The Nazis were beginning to lose the war, so Von Richter was on edge almost constantly. This meant that he physically and sexually abused Vianne, and to save Daniel from being deported, she let it happen and did not resist. For Von Richter, the desperation aspect was slightly different. Unlike Vianne, he acted in a more tyrannical way, taking his anger out on Vianne, thinking that, in some way, it would help the Nazis win the war. Although the desperation that Von Richter shows is less obvious, he still possesses it.

When the Nazis took over France, the french people were given ration cards that only allowed them certain amounts of food. Vianne sent Isabelle to stand it the queues every morning, and it started to take a massive toll on her body. Because the Nazis didn't give out new clothes or shoes to the french people, they had to live with what they had, and for some it didn't last long. Isabelle stole the bike because it allowed her to get around faster and without ruining her shoes, but it also gave her a tiny bit of power over the Nazis. Isabelle was quite the rebellious character, but this act was prompted entirely by the wish for her to get off her aching feet.

Both Vianne and Isabelle (and even a few of the minor characters) acted entirely out of desperation in certain moments, but not every situation is quite the same. Not every act of desperation is caused by war. War, of course, is a very significant event and effects a lot of people, so acts such as the ones mentioned in this book are quite common. What we have to understand is not everyone is the same as us and everyone has a different situation. Whether someone is rich or poor, powerful or powerless doesn't mean that they can't commit an act that they'll regret.

"Desperate times call for desperate measures."
You've probably heard someone say this at some point in your life, and it was probably in a time that didn't really require desperate measures. We tend to exaggerate situations because we believe that we understand everything, when in reality we don't.

(Tie back to Introduction and Importance)

The most important thing to take away from this book is that everyone lives a different life and we as a society have to understand their situation and the things that they do, whether that means we admit we're wrong or not.
