Vianne always thinks that removing Isabelle from her life is the best way to stay safe, but she always regrets it because she wants to know if her sister is safe. The Nazis were beginning to lose the war, so Von Richter was on edge almost constantly. This meant that he physically and sexually abused Vianne, and to save Daniel from being deported, she let it happen and did not resist. For Von Richter, the desperation aspect was slightly different. Vianne sent Isabelle to stand it the queues every morning, and it started to take a massive toll on her body. Because the Nazis didn't give out new clothes or shoes to the french people, they had to live with what they had, and for some it didn't last long. Not every act of desperation is caused by war. War, of course, is a very significant event and effects a lot of people, so acts such as the ones mentioned in this book are quite common. What we have to understand is not everyone is the same as us and everyone has a different situation.
