In this first week of 457 class, I learned about the struggles high school students face reaching proficient reading levels and the barriers English Language learners face from going through school without intentional literacy and language based instruction (Macias, 2020, Week 1). This is just one of the many useful tools I gained from this course. This word grid/ synthesis journal would be even more amazing if I were to add a visual or example along with all of the useful strategies listed. Having a visual of broken down and detailed information allows me to connect with the strategies without feeling overwhelmed. (Macias, 2020, Weekly Reflection Sheet week 9). With my mentee, I practiced incorporating real life scenarios into his Math word problems and in SEL lessons. This allowed him to apply his content knowledge in a more authentic manner and feel like he could approach the problem with less hesitation. (Macias, 2020, Weekly Reflection week 2). Before this class I have never thought about the vocabulary and language used in physical education. It is crucial for all teachers to consistently grow  in assisting  students in expanding their range of literate competencies, while they enrich others with their own personal funds of knowledge and cultural competencies.
