a focus on inclusivity as opposed to excluding types of races. i'm aware that whiteness can carry a lot of privilege in this world, of course. however, 'f**k white feminism' and other such slogans feel targeted and aggressive. we need everybody, and people focused exclusively on 'white feminist values' do need to sit down and listen to POC experiences if we want to move ahead. but a blanket 'f**k white feminism' is unhelpful and puts people off. speaking as a POC btw

the term non-men should not be used imo since there are always better alternatives that don't exclude multigender, genderfluid and other nonbinary trans folks. there is a strong argument for use of 'marginalised genders' instead of nonmen, as to exclude cis men from certain events and make it a safe space for ALL people who experience misogyny.

the term non-men is also just kinda dodgy in general as I believe its original use was from a black scholar (I cannot for the life of me find the source rn sorry) who talked about the classifying of black people as 'nonmen nonwomen' or 'nonwomen nonmen' aka as 'other' from white people. but please don't quote me on that because I'm white and can't find my source.

it's also used a lot to uphold a lot of ideas about binary gender (or seeing nonbinary as a third gender) and lesbian exclusionism (which is rooted in terf rhetoric). so it does kinda rub me as a trans person the wrong way.

I'm happy to argue my case further about this but tbh I think I've said most of what I need to say. There are very few instances where nonmen would be a good term to use

intersectionality describes how people face not only one prejudice but due to their overlapping identities there is a complexity that has to be uplifited. for minority groups smag needs to uplift the vulnerable groups and the groups that have no place to go on campus. we need to create not only a safe space but a platform for their stories to be heard first and foremost. exclusivity goes against his value, but we must break down the racial hierarchy in feminism by going against traditional white feminism and the white feminists who lead and have privileges and advantages and a “head start”…

white feminists in the past have had the privilege of speaking for all women in their feminism as their discrimination was sexism alone. poc feminists have had to pick one intersect of their lives and boil down their discrimination which meant that white feminists spoke for women and poc women chose to speak on their discrimination as poc people, rather than confronting the complexity of that issue as we all have intersects in our lives. furthermore, poc women and white women have had to be compared and generalised which, we all can agree do not have the same experience.

we have to destroy this “top-down” way of looking at discrimination which generalises poc women’s discrimination in a white lense, and we can apply this logic to every other intersect of people and experiences that are marginalised.

it is all about not having to pick one intersection of our lives but to prove the complexity of how poc and queer people get discriminated against.

this is why white privileged feminists should not dominate smag. if they do, it perpetuates the very white feminism we want to take down and therefore using the label would be trivial.

the label itself is not necessary to use for every single feminism. white women still and should have a place in feminism. but the label intersectional means that the ones on top should have intersections in their life that they want to speak about as it is a unique experience. white feminism has proved over decades and it is something we have heard before. it should not be cut off but intersectionality wants to get rid of the fact that everyone should be generalised and spoken for by white feminists.

it must be used properly and with genuine care, without throwing it on there. if white privileged feminists continue to dominate smag, the magazine would not be logical in using the word “intersectional”. this is because intersectionality wants to tear down the dominant ideology and the white race dominates every sector of our life.

our magazine should therefore get rid of a “top-down” ideology too.

ngl I feel like s’mag has been equating lgbt issues w the issues of poc and in doing so erasing the harm that white queer ppl can do to poc. calling WASS a “queer exclusive” organisation for example when many of the exec are (white) queers feels like you couldn’t just say exclusive to woc and had to tack on the queer part. tbh it just feels like another symptom of white queer ppl being unable to care about race unless it centres themselves (i.e. relates to their queerness)

there’s also a lot of talk about all these non queer women in s’mag which feels like a massive jump to conclusions about people’s sexuality (bi women exist) and generally the idea that lgbt men are innocent and INCAPABLE of EVER being sexist towards women uwu which just isn’t true and completely erases the experiences of queer women who have faced sexism from lgbt men
