He meets Elie and while having a shy personality, Elie takes a liking to him anyways. We learn more about Elie and how he is religious and wants to learn the Kabbah. His father denies this, telling him that there are no Kabbalists in Sighet. Moishe learns about this and agrees to teach Elie on the Kabbah. Later on, the Hungarian police start to arrest foreign Jews from Sighet like Moishe. Time passes and Moishe returns but tells them how he was supposed to die by the Gestapo but lived because of how he was left for dead. He eventually wants the people to the horrors of what happened but no one listened to him. "Even I do not believe him. I often sat with him after services, and listened to his tales, trying to understand his grief" (Wiesel 7). Time passes again and the news about Jews and how they were being subjected to attacks and crimes. People do not pay as much mind and started Passover but were not allowed to leave their houses. Eventually, they are moved to ghettos and after getting used to and settling in, Elie's father gets news of the deportation. Most people got deported on the day of the deportation but Elie's family had gotten delayed by several days. They are on their way to what is an unknown destination to them. The passengers on this train are told that if any are missing from this train, everyone will get shot. We are then introduced to Mrs. Schater who starts to scream about a vision of fire. Elie knows her from before and she is eventually beaten because of her screams but still continues to scream on multiple occasions. Many people on the train try to brush it off and not believe it. They arrive at their destination which is Birkenau. Birkenau is also close to Auschwitz. The passengers and Elie and his family are forced to leave their possessions in the cattle car, "The beloved objects that we had carried with us from place to place were now left behind in the wagon, and with them, finally, our illusions", (Wiesel 29). They move towards the camp and the men and women are separated. this would be the last time that Elie and his family would see each other. Elie learns from other prisoners about how most, if not, all of the survivors living are in the age range would be 18-40. This makes Elie lie about his age and occupation, making him 18 and a farmer. This would slide with Dr. Mengele. Eventually he and his father were admitted to the camps where Elie starts to lose faith in god and his justice and mercy. The men are forced to run to different places for clothes , disinfectants and the barbers. Elie feels like he lost his identity at this point and feels no longer like a child or student. They are eventually moved to Auschwitz. There he meets his relative Stein and he asks them about their family. Elie lies to him, telling them that the were safe. Stein becomes a visitor to them occasionally and brings food. throughput all this, Elie loses faith more and more and eventually does not even pray. He was given new clothing and was settled into two tents. Later on in the evening, Elie goes ahead and asks the "veterans" of the camp which Kommandos were best to be with and which to avoid completely. He is told that Buna is a good camp, its just they should not be with a construction Kommando, but they did not even have a choice to pick. The person in charge of Elie and the others was a fat German, one of his assistants ask Elie for his shoes but he refuses. Next day were dental examination, particularly for gold crowns. If you have one, you are written down onto a list. Elie has a gold crown but when examined, he puts off the gold crown extraction by saying he was sick. Eventually the dentist was caught and punished because he was pocketing the gold crowns. In a factory, Elie works with a French girl who seems to be Jewish but passes as Aryan. One day, Idek (Kapo) gets angry at Elie and beats him. The French girl witnesses this and helps him out, giving Elie bread and telling him not to lose hope. Many years later on in life, Elie encounters her again on a train in Paris and look back on their youth and past. Back to the past, Idek goes crazy again but beats Elie's father this time. Rather than getting mad at the Kapo, he gets mad at his father for not avoiding him and keeping his distance. We then see Franke, who is the foreman, ask for Elie's gold crown. Elie refuses this offer which causes Franek to beat his father to get a reaction out of him. Elie then obliges and gives him the tooth, taken out with a rusty spoon. Eventually, there was an air raid on Buna where everyone is kind of on lockdown and remained in their bunks. One man decides to leave because of two unattended soups that he spots.  he was killed because of this but the bombs on Buna helped the prisoners have hope for the future. Later on, Elie and other prisoners are forced to watch hangings, disturbing and inhumane things that should not be seen by anyone. Elie in particular witnesses a young boy being hung, he struggled because of his own body weight, meaning he did not die as fast as the others. he slowly struggles for 30 minutes until his death. When he ate later that night, all Elie could think about was that boy and others hanging. He had even lost his appetite. "That night, the soup tasted of corpses." Elie however is thinking about his faith and devotion to god. He thinks God is testing him and others and is mad he is letting all of this harm happen to them. Elie even refuses to fast during Yom Kippur to keep his strength but also to mock God and basically say to God he is losing his faith. Later on, Elie's and his father are split up because Elie is being moved to a different Kommando, the construction Kommando. Word spread of an upcoming selection which brings fear to the prisoners and Elie and his father are given some helpful tips. They are told to look strong and useful and not to show any fear. The selection comes and they are checked and inspected by Dr. Mengele who was a notorious doctor in several Nazi camps. Elie and his father pass the selection thankfully. A few days go by and his father is put on a list of selected prisoners, for death. His father felt like time was running out for himself. He talks to Elie rapidly and gives him different items that were his, " 'Here, take this knife,' he said, 'I won't need it anymore, you may find it useful. Also, take this spoon. Don't sell it." (Wiesel 75). It was what his father had left, what he wanted his son to inherit. Elie because scared and sad for his father. He is later relieved to see his father had passed the second selection. He gives the spoon and knife back to his father, sadly one of their friends Akiba Drumer was selected. Winter had arrived for them and it was the new year. Elie's foot begins to swell because of these cold nights and he goes to see a doctor. He stays at the hospital where life is better than at the camps. he fears that while he is at the camps, he will be selected and killed off. The doctor tells him that his foot will feel numb for a few days and that it is not going to be amputated luckily. He is told to wait about 2 weeks to recover for his foot. He waits a while until rumors about Russians invading the hospital goes around. He evacuates just incase and searches for his father. He later learns that those in the hospitals were liberated and freed. Zap an, Elies friend, stops due to a stomach ache but gets trampled and crushed to death as a result. When the prisoners arrive at a stop for rest. Elies father tells him not to die to the freezing nature and how easily he could be killed by the cold in his sleep. Many people around them already seem to have died from the temperatures. A rabbi comes by looking for his son. Elie remembers his son and how he was beside him but left his father behind. Elie prays that he does not do this to his own father and his ambitions of being fully free does not overcome him. They are then sent to March again to go to Gleiwitz. They reach it after a long few hours and during that time Elies foot was numb from the snow. They reach the barracks for the sleeping quarters. There he sees Juliek struggling to get out of the stacked beds with his violin. He and his violin was being crushed and in the morning, Elie finds him dead. After 3 days of living in the barracks, they are sent out to another selection. Elies father gets sent to the left side again but Elie manages to sneak him onto the right side with him. Those on the right are sent to a train car. The prisoners were closely packed into the train car for that night. There were many dead bodies so the train stops for people to throw them out for space. Elies father among the dead people looked as dead as them. He was woken up by Elie with a few beatings and lived for the time being. A lot of space was then acquired and they then traveled for the next 10 days. They are passed some pieces bread crust during the trip. There were little amounts so people had to fight for their food, even a son killed his father for a piece. The German officers found this amusing so they continued to pass on more bread for their enjoyment. One night, Elie was being strangled but was saved by his dads friend Meir Katz. Meir Katz tells Elie on why they don’t just kill them and why do they find the torture amusing. They arrive at Buchenwald, almost a 100 people had entered the train at first and only about a dozen survived and got off. They are sent to more barracks to sleep. Elie wakes up and does not find his father. He thinks about what may have happened to him and wishes for the worst for him sadly. The reason being is that he wishes to be free from his father so he would have to only look out for himself. He prays to not let himself find his father but still finds him getting coffee. Later on, it was evident his father was dysentery and could not live for much longer. He was taken to the doctors but was declined because there were only surgeons. During one night, his father is attacked and his Elie tries to defend him. The prisoners laugh at him, and tell him to stop taking care of his father at this point. Elie ponders on this and even considers it. His father asks him for water and the ss officer hears this and hits him hard in the head. Elie looks at him slowly dying and calling out his name and goes to sleep. In the morning, his dad is gone, probably sent to the crematorium. Elie did not cry and felt guilty about what he did, but at last he was “free”. During April 11th, a few weeks after his fathers death, American tanks invade Buchenwald and liberate the survivors. Everyone has a giant feast and eats with each other. Elie gets food poisoning because of this and recovers in the hospital.
