Ḥikmah in Islam refers to wisdom and the ability to understand and act according to Allah’s guidance. It combines knowledge, intellect, sincere intention, and righteous action. Ḥikmah can be acquired through proper ʿibādah, as worship develops inner qualities such as humility, sincerity, and devotion. Education also helps nurture ḥikmah by encouraging critical thinking and understanding Islamic values. Along with this, correct niyyah and consistent amal are essential, as actions are judged by intention. The concept of ihsan completes faith by encouraging excellence in worship and good character, leading Muslims to live according to Islamic teachings .

The wisdom (ḥikmah) behind Islamic acts of worship (ʿibādah) and how they benefit individuals and society. Worship in Islam is not only about rituals, but also about building strong moral character and strengthening the relationship with Allah.

The presentation highlights four main acts of worship:

1. Ṣalāh (Prayer)

Prayer is an important daily practice that helps Muslims remember Allah and stay away from immoral and sinful actions. The Qur’an states that prayer prevents wrongdoing and strengthens faith.

2. Ṣawm (Fasting)

Fasting during Ramadan is prescribed to develop taqwā (God-consciousness). It teaches self-control, patience, and encourages Muslims to become more righteous.

3. Zakāh (Charity)

Zakāh is a form of giving that purifies wealth and the heart. It helps reduce poverty, supports the needy, and creates social balance. Charity also strengthens unity within the Muslim community.

4. Ḥajj (Pilgrimage)

Ḥajj is a major spiritual journey that teaches discipline, equality, and devotion to Allah. Muslims are reminded to avoid arguments and sinful behavior, and the best preparation is having taqwā.

Conclusion

Overall, these acts of worship bring spiritual growth, moral improvement, and social harmony. They show that Islamic worship is full of wisdom and plays a key role in guiding Muslims toward a better life in this world and the hereafter.

This discourse explains the proper preparation for achieving khushu’ in salah by understanding its essential components. It covers the conditions, pillars, sunnah practices, and invalidators of salah, emphasizing that correct performance ensures valid worship. The presentation also discusses wuduk, including its pillars, conditions, sunnah acts, and matters that nullify it, as purification is a prerequisite for prayer. Tayammum is explained as an alternative purification method when water cannot be used. Lastly, the concept of khushu’ is highlighted as focus, humility, and awareness during prayer, along with factors that hinder it and practical ways to cultivate it, such as proper preparation, understanding the meanings of recitations, and avoiding distractions, to enhance the quality of worship.

The virtues of performing Ṣalāh with khushūʿ (focus, humility, and full attention to Allah). Khushūʿ means having a sincere and calm heart during prayer, not just performing physical movements. It helps strengthen a Muslim’s relationship with Allah, builds good character, and prevents sinful behaviour.

Ṣalāh with khushūʿ develops several important values. It builds Al-Ṭāah (submission and loyalty) by training Muslims to obey Allah sincerely. It also develops Al-Jihād al-nafs (inner struggle) by helping believers fight laziness and distractions. Prayer encourages Muḥāsabah (self-reflection) where Muslims evaluate their actions and improve themselves.

Additionally, khushūʿ promotes ʿIffah (modesty and self-restraint) by guiding Muslims away from sinful acts and improving daily behaviour. It also nurtures Tawaḍḍuʿ (humility) by reminding believers of their dependence on Allah and removing pride.

Overall, khushūʿ is described as the soul of Ṣalāh because it strengthens faith, shapes Islamic personality, and helps transform a person’s heart and actions.

The virtues of fasting (ṣawm) and its importance in Islam. Fasting is prescribed for believers as it was for earlier nations, and its main purpose is to develop taqwa (mindfulness and awareness of Allah). Taqwa means protecting oneself from wrongdoing by being careful and obedient to Allah.

Fasting is not only about avoiding food and drink. It also teaches Muslims to avoid lying, bad behaviour, and sinful actions. The Prophet ﷺ emphasised that fasting has no value if a person continues immoral behaviour.

Fasting helps develop sabr (patience) and self-restraint. It trains Muslims to stay obedient to Allah, avoid prohibited acts, and stay strong during difficulties. According to Al-Ghazali, fasting has three levels: the basic level (avoiding food, drink, and desires), the intermediate level (controlling body parts from sin), and the highest level (protecting the heart from distractions from Allah).

Fasting also builds rahmah (mercy and empathy). Feeling hunger helps Muslims understand the struggles of the poor and encourages them to help others, including feeding those who are fasting.

The virtues of Zakāh and Ṣadaqah in Islam. Zakāh is one of the pillars of Islam and is a compulsory act of worship that involves giving a portion of wealth to those who are eligible. It aims to purify wealth, develop good character, and improve social welfare.

Zakāh teaches Muslims tawakkul (trust and reliance on Allah). By giving part of their wealth, Muslims show that they depend on Allah rather than material possessions. They believe that Allah will replace and increase what they give for His sake.

Zakāh also promotes ukhūwah (brotherhood and unity) among Muslims. It reduces selfishness and encourages care, empathy, and responsibility towards others, especially the needy. It strengthens both the relationship between humans and Allah and the relationship between people in society.

Overall, Zakāh has both spiritual and social benefits. It helps Muslims become less attached to wealth, increases faith, and builds unity and compassion within the community.
