Recruiting Witches

The picture Below depicts four witches bringing children to the Devil. The witches are shown to be doing this because it was their duty and faithful followers and partners with the Devil to bring more under his command. Most of the modern day population can conclude that witches do not exist, but this was not so in Salem during the seventeenth century. Back then almost every townsperson lived in fear that they were being tempted and tormented by the Devil and his witches. They chose to believe in these witches because it offered them and easy explanation to any unrighteous thoughts or actions that disobeyed the Puritan's rigorous religion.

An Innocent Life Lost

This unsettling picture shows a young woman being prepped to be hung. In the picture they have tied her up and are about to wrap a noose around her neck. She is being hung because she has denied being a witch. Although she denied the accusations, in the Puritan culture, that means that she was confirming the fact that she was a witch. Because the Puritans follow the Bible word for word they know that they should "not suffer a witch," and choose to solve that problem by hanging her and others like her.

Unfair Trail

This picture illustrates a method of trial they used for witches. This process included strapping the accused to a chair and throwing them into a river. The river was deep enough to cover the person's head so if they were human like they claimed when they fell in they would drown. If they were able to set them selves free or float they were considered to be a witch. If they were a witch then they would use one of their many methods to kill them. The most popular and commonly used method was hanging.

A Simple Life

The Puritan's were a highly religious group that followed what the Bible said very closely. They lived simple lives that reflected those that were lived within the book. This meant they dressed in little to no colors besides blacks and whites. They ate food not for the taste but because it fueled them and allowed them to fulfill their tasks. And their families were set up so the wife bore children and stayed home to care for them while the husbands went out and did all of the work.

A Review of The Witch Hunts

The Puritans were very strict in their day to day lives and were sure to present themselves as proper and competent people. Their religious life style would have been rigorous but not problematic if they did not start to accuse people of being witches. They made accusations in order to get rid of people they disliked, had a feud with, or they thought was evil. They accused were brought to unfair and violating trials. And then by the end of the trial they were either killed or marked for life as being an accused witch. The Puritans took the word of the Bible too far and in turn created a society that turned on each other and killed many innocent people. One of the cruel ways that they treated people is shown in the image below.
