That's why using informal language might be ok in a personal narrative, but not in an informational text. It also gives them exposure to different types of writing to see what they might like best and be most interested in.

It is important for students to produce writing in lots of genres because it exposes them to different formats and purposes for the writing. Like most of us - we don't know we're missing something if we never had it to miss. I explain to my students that there's more to life than hot cheetos. They might be missing out on something even better. We all think we don't like poetry until we read one that hits home for us. Using various genres is like a buffet -it's all you can consume, but you have try a little of everything before you truly know what your favorite taste might be. :)

If a student learns to write in lyrical and sensory formats, then when it comes time to make an argumentative paper and take a stand, they have a lot more tools in their tool kit. This is important, because in order to achieve their "Purpose", they must have a "Craft." If one os to write satire, the lyricism gleaned from writing poetry cn give the argument a beautiful visual effetct form word placement-bullet points etc... If one os to write about informational pievces, the ability to see another's view point is highly important. The most effective way to communicate information is to be able to visualize your audience, and address them according to who they are, an what you are trying to convey. Good writing has a little bit of everything.

I love showing learners how poetry forces deep, meaningful thought from the active reader. I love showing students how a well developed expository text can lead to structuralist ideas. I love showing students that just the thought and movement of writing can release things that weigh heavily on the mind. Knowing all genres allows for the learner to choose their favorite canvas.
