Social media is an anonymous space, which means people are more bold to assert their view. When a controversial idea takes hold in society, it results in segregation and categorisation of people in the digital space. This makes it hard for people to understand each other as the space is devoid of qualities that make a full person. Anger is superficial but each person's interpretation is tailored. A lack of empathy also makes it hard to be receptive and understanding. This results in people adding fuel to a fight that is not even theirs. Stereotypes and prejudice spread easily in social media as people project their own fears into the debate. Racial harmony is fragile as people are occupied with their own lives and others are easily seen as intruding and invading into theirs.
