"When his palms hit her shoulders, when the water closed over her head, Lydia had felt relief so great she had sighed in a deep choking lungful" (154).

Nath pushes Lydia into the lake and helps her back out. This is the summer that they became the closest because this is when Marilyn disappeared. Nath was always there for Lydia. He understood the pressure she felt from their mom and dad; and sympathized with her because of that. This is representing the weight he felt with her. Him pulling her back out of the water when she is drowning in the pressure. In addition, as the eldest child Nath may not realize the amount Lydia takes into account his opinions.

"They made it almost all the way to the finish line before Nath tripped and dropped his" (156).

Nath and his dad were in a three-legged race. However, Nath was not as into the race as the other kids. This most likely stemmed from fear. As the eldest child, he naturally has a lot of expectations on his shoulder. He is also the only boy in the family. He has grown a fear of disappointing his dad and it has taken a toll on little activities like this. He takes every moment into account and thinks everything as a success or failure. James puts this pressure on Nath all because of his fear as a father, of his kids not fitting in.

"'Not bad, James said. He smiled, as if half embarrassed and put his hand on Nath's shoulder, and Nath felt it-heavy and warm-through his shirt" (170).

Nath has been accepted into Harvard. He doubted himself throughout the process, but he did it. He finally is feeling the reassurance from his dad. He has finally made him proud and lived up to his standards. From now until the future, Nath finds himself stuck in a Harvard tunnel vision from this point. He has finally gotten the approval and is ready to branch out and get as far away from the family. This is his out.

"Nath sighed. 'What happened? Did Mom nag you about your homework...'Wait, let me guess. Mom bought you a special present, but it was just a book. Dad bought you a new dress-no, a diamond necklace-and he expects you to wear it" (262).

Nath is getting tired of Lydia complaining. Nath promised Lydia that he would call, which did not seem unlikely for their relationship. However, to Lydia's somewhat surprise he does not call. She is feelings Nath's shift in moral. Before Lydia did not even have to say anything and Nath knew what was wrong. At this point Nath is really getting used to his life away from home and he is motivated to stay as far away from the problems as possible.

"Jack gives a quick backward glance, and when his gaze meets Nath's, there's no doubt: he is frightened. Then he turns the curve and is now gone" (63).

Nath decides to pick a fight with Jack because he is under the impression that Jack knows something about Lydia's death. He has never liked Jack and always had doubts about his intentions with Lydia. Nath is taking his anger out onto Jack. He is doing this especially because of the fact he does not have any answers as to why Lydia is dead, and his last couple interactions with her did not represent what their relationship meant to him. He probably feels a lot of regret and is trying to place blame on something in order to find answers.

"Nath, fighting through a deep and groggy stupor, the voice sounds like his father's...it is his father...Officer Fiske crouching beside him in the open car door, it is still true" (252).

Nath gets very drunk and his dad and the police officer find him in the car blacked out. Nath went from feeling like he is on the top of the world to a very vulnerable state. He and the rest of the family are in a stage of grief that feels very unknown and can be scary. It is the beginning of realizing your life has to move on without them. However, on top of that he feels like his family is falling apart. With the drama of his parents and his dads affair with Louisa, he is realizing that if everyone is losing it, he will too. He was so excited to go off to college and escape the reality that seemed impossible to bare, only to come back to even worse.
