In AP Lit this year, I've asked students to take notes on their novels largely through questioning: noting what's complex, confusing, or intriguing ("I wonder" kind of questions).

For the first class we meet after they read a novel, I have students write 3 discussion questions on sticky notes and use those to guide a small-group discussion of the novel.

I realize this might not work so well for a non-AP class, but I like giving them the option to come back and talk about the things that they want to talk about, that they find interesting, instead of what I do.

Student Reflection on Rubric

Something I'm trying out this quarter in Eng. 11 is having students reflect on the summative rubrics, in which they highlight 2-3 items that they feel are the most important for the assessment grade, along with writing 2 questions at the bottom of the page relating to the prompt and/or rubric itself (clarification, confusions, etc.).

Already observed most (about 60-70%) of each of my classes following through with this task, and even observed those who didn't write anything down posing their questions to nearby peers. We'll see how much engagement there is for the Crucible precis rubrics later on.

Safety in numbers

In English 10, we give rhetorical analysis a whirl. It is something the majority of kids have not tackled, so getting them to talk can be tricky. I do A LOT of partner/group work to get them talking first to each other before class share outs. They talk and agree on idea as a group, so sharing isn't so scary. It is a basic strategy but works to get them talking.
