March by John Lewis

March is a graphic memoir about John Lewis's activism during the Civil Rights Movement in America during the 1960s. He was on the front lines of this movement, teaching and spreading nonviolence, in attempt to get equal voting rights for Black Americans. He was regularly humiliated, jailed, beaten, and even had his skull fractured, and all he was asking was to be seen and treated as an equal human being.

March was one of the most powerful books that I have read in a very long time. It made me very upset, to see how hard John Lewis, and so many others, had to fight just to get the same rights as White people. It also made me think of all the protests and racial injustice that we have been seeing this year. John Lewis wrote this book so that people will never forget his "good trouble", but I also think that he wrote this to point out to everyone that the "March" isn't over yet.

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt

The Wednesday Wars was o book that that took place in the Vietnam War era. A 7 th grade boy named Holling Hoodhood and his teacher Mrs.Baker would spend the last period on Wednesdays reading Shakespeare. The rest of his class would go to Religious studies. Holling did not go because he was a Presbyterian and the rest of his class was either Catholic or Jewish so he did not have a church to go to. Holling did not like his teacher until one day when his dad told him he was going to bring him to a Yankees game but never showed up. Mrs Baker decided she would take him.

I really liked this book. I liked it because Holling knew what he did and didn't like and did not hide his emotions. He was also nice to his friends most of the time, and went out of his way to try and get them cream puffs. The only thing I did not like about it was that when I first picked the book out I thought it was going to be more about the Vietnam War.

The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis

The Watsons go to Birmingham is a book all about the weird world of 10-year-old Kenny Watson. It is 1963, a time of segregation and racial injustice. Kenny's 13-year-old brother, Byron, is a "juvenile delinquent", and is always doing bad stuff. He also an nice 8-year-old sister named Joey. One day, Byron's behavior gets too bad so their parents decide that Byron will spend the summer in Birmingham with Grandma Sands, with hopes to whip him into shape. And the best part is, the whole family gets to come along for the ride. But while in Birmingham, things take a dark turn. One day, while Joey is at Sunday School, the church she is at gets bombed by two white men. After that, their lives were never the same.

I really liked this book. It was a very good historical fiction book with a bit of humor involved too. The one downfall in my opinion was that a lot of people I talked to said that this book would be very funny, but I did not really find it to be super funny. But overall, it was a very good book.

Cardboard by Doug TenNapel.
Cardboard is a graphic novel about this one boy named Cam. It was his birthday, and his dad wanted to surprise him with a gift, but all he could afford was a piece of cardboard. He got told that the cardboard was magical, so his dad brought it home. Even though it was just cardboard, Cam was still super excited. They built characters out of it, it little did they know the cardboard characters were going to come alive! They were super surprised. One main character came alive, and they named him bill. He was super overprotective, and would protect dad and Cam at any cost. They ran into some trouble through the way, that destroyed the neighborhood, but bill, saved them all.
My honest opinion about Cardboard is that I really loved it. I loved the illustrations, the details, and the story! I think for people who think reading is boring, Cardboard will definitely change their minds.

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt
The Wednesday Wars is a book that I read this summer I would say the main idea of the book was surviving seventh grade. The main character is Holling Hoodhood. This books takes place in long Island New York and the timeline is the whole seventh grade year during the Vietnam war, and so many things interfere. Some things that happen are Holling gets given a cream puff so then he has to get his whole class cream puffs, then someone is making him do a play, then some rats ate the cream puffs, then he needs to get a baseball singed but he forgot, then he found one and the baseball player made fun of him, then he got an embarrassing picture put up in school, Then his friend stole his dads idea for a building their dads were competing for, then he saves his sisters life and is a hero, then he finds out his teacher does not know if her husbands alive, Then at the end of the book they go on a camping trip and so many things happen, and over the course of all of this his father is really rude to him. Even though so many things happen it all works out in the end things even work out for his teacher. I would say this was a god book over all.

The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt

The Wednesday wars is about a 7th grade boy named Holling Hoodhood. It takes place during the Vietnam War in Long Island, New York. Holling is your average 7th grade boy that doesn't want to make a seen and stay hidden for the rest of the year. That is difficult for him because he is a Presbyterian while all the other students are either Catholic or Jewish. Since he is a Presbyterian he has to stay after school on Wednesday afternoons and read Shakespeare while his classmates are of learning about there religions. During the story events happen that stop Holling to have the 7th grade year he had imagined. Some of the these events are Holling is threatened o got cream puffs for his class by his classmates. In order for him to get these cream puffs he has to take part in a Shakespeare play.

I think this is a very good book. To be honest it is nothing like I had expected it to be like. I thought that it was only going to be about a boy who reads Shakespeare on wednasday afternoons. There is so much more to it then that. The way the author started it and then finished it was amazing. Everything you wondered throughout the book eventually made scene by the end. Although this is not my favorite book over all it is amazing.

Leslie and Jess called it Terabithia and they were the queen and king of it with tons of other magical creatures. Each day the had to go on a swing, and swing over to the other side in the woods. Everything was amazing until one day Jesse had to go to the art museum with his teacher he had a crush on. He never told Leslie so she had no idea where he was.

A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L'engle

A Wrinkle In Time is about a girl named Meg who goes with her brother Charles and her friend Calvin to go find her father with some other ladies named Mrs. Who and Mrs. Watson and a few other people. When Meg finds her father, another problem occurs where Charles gets taken into "IT" which is a monster in the story that tries to take Charles and have his family lose him forever. But luckily Meg his older sister comes and helps him and she saved him by using the only power that "IT' didn't have, which was love.

I really liked this book because I can actually relate to Meg in some ways, and this book was really interesting to me because I have never read a book about time travel. Also, I liked this book because it was the book was based on the past which is pretty cool because back then they didn't have phones or anything so they couldn't just call for help, and they actually figured it out themselves on how to save Charles and Meg and Charles father. Lastly, I liked this book because it had to do with magic, and magic makes books really fun for me and it makes me more interested in reading that book.

The Phantom Tollbooth, by Norton Juster.

In the beginning of The Phantom tollbooth we are introduced to a boy named Milo. Milo thought his life was just a big bore, until one day a package arrived at his front door. He opened up the package and in it was a bunch of parts. Milo was really curious on what the parts were for so he started to assemble all of the parts. When he was done assembling all of the parts it came together to be a tollbooth and a small car that Milo could drive. Milo was wondering what would happen if he drove through the tollbooth so he thought about it and then he hopped into the car and started to drive through the tollbooth. After he had been driving for a while, he went to the island of Conclusions. While on the island he met a watchdog named Tock, and Tock became Milo’s best friend. Then in the middle of the story, Milo kept driving until he reached Dictionopolis. While in Dictionopolis he met the Spelling Bee, the Humbug, King Azaz, Faintly Macabre, and Officer Shrift. While Milo was there he found out that the people from Dictionopolis eat words and letters, instead of food. Towards the end of the story Milo, Tock, and the Humbug where sent on a mission by King Azaz to rescue the princesses (aka) rhyme and reason. Finally after being chased by demons and monsters they saved the two princesses. When he came home everyone there had a big party for Milo, Tock, The humbug, and the two princesses. After that huge party Milo went home realizing that you can so much more by just imagining things and having faith in yourself.

I think that this author did a great job keeping the reader hooked and writing a great story. Overall I would rate this book 7/10 stars.

I know the sadness is in the book, but I don't think the sadness was something for you to focus on. Look for the brighter side
