Jin Qingzi 1B tg4

Yes Singapore was a sleeping fishing village. Singapore was in a remote location and is sparsely populated. Most inhabitants were fishermen that relied heavily on fishing for livelihood. The population of the villages was small and most of the inhabitants lead a simple life. Before 1819, inhabitants in Singapore were relatively isolated from the outside world and lived self-sufficient lives. Singapore before 1819 was a village that was unassuming, unremarkable and mundane. Therefore Singapore was a sleeping fishing village.

Name: Y Veydhaa

Class: 1 Altruism

Teaching group: TG4

No, Singapore was not a sleepy fishing village before 1819. Based on a historical investigation, it is believed that it was then known as Temasek, having a rich capital city in Fort Canning Hill ruled by Malay kings and with a vibrant trading port that was popular with many foreign traders who brought their countries' products to trade.

The Sejarah Melaya, in a source , written by a court official in the 16th century documents Singapore as Temasek founded and ruled by a Palembang prince , Sang Nila Utama and his successors during the 13th and 14th centuries. Their capital was built on Fort Canning Hill. The ruins of the bricks foundation supports the existence of the capital city and the good quality bricks used further tells us that their kingdom was wealthy. The artefact, Malay earthernware cooking pot in the Hill ,further confirms the existence of a Malay settlement on the Hill.

It is believed that it was a vibrant trading port that attracted many foreign traders trading in a huge variety of goods. A Chinese trader, Wang Dayuan , wrote his account of his travel in 1330 to Singapore. He wrote that Singapore then called Temasek having a local ruler. He also wrote that it attracted many foreign traders and pirates. We know that this is a reliable account because of the thousands of artefacts dating back to the 14th century was found buried under layers of soil in the Hill. Artefacts such as fragments of white and blue porcelain from ancient chinese bowls, bronze coins dating back to the Tang and Song dynasty shows that chinese traders brought porcelain produced in China to Singapore for trading and coins were used as the currency.

All of this information shows us that Singapore was indeed not a sleepy fishing village before 1819 but was a wealthy and lively trading port, ruled by ancient kings , with a capital city built on Fort Canning Hill that attracted traders from China, India, Middle East and other Asian countries to trade at its port.
