In 'Flowers' by Alice Walker, I found it particularly interesting that she used setting to symbolize Myop's journey towards a more mature and aware world view, culminating with her discovery of the dead body in the forest, where she has her epiphany and realizes that the world is not safe, and she will not be sheltered forever.

One burning question I still have pertains to the descriptions Walker includes of the dead body. What were the circumstances of his death? She seems to allude to slavery, but I am not entirely sure if this is correct.

This is also my burning question; is he really doing this out of a desire to belong, as the story is interpreted or is it a story of overcoming failures and stubbornness?

What I found most interesting in the story was the relationship between the brother and sister; you could see the younger brother slowly grow and change, no longer innocent as he once was; you could say that in a way, he would be moulded into the man that his family would want him to be while his sister would "just be a girl", while he loses his naivety. An example of this was when the brother stops singing with his sister and considers it silly, symbolic of the relationship they once had breaking. Another indicator of this was when he wants to go on the truck along with his dad, coming home with blood on his clothes, becoming the real help to his father as the mother would say earlier on in the story; he is now taking an interest in the farm and is helping with the dirty work while Flora would stay at home, quietly rebelling against her father.

A burning question I have is about how Flora will come to grapple with her identity as a girl if the story were to continue in the future; as in the last parts of the story, she rebelled, but the very last line "I didn't protest that, even in my heart. Maybe it was true" shows that maybe she will accept her "fate" as a girl as her parents want her to be.

Was he perhaps disinterested the moment they started talking about the strange woman?

I found it interesting how that when the children were being forced, whitewashed even, to abandon their culture in the face of colonists, the methods succeeded in a way, making them conform to western ideals to survive; we see this at the last lines: "we disguise ourselves and hide our hearts because we love our children."; showing that in the end, Shane was named so because they wanted him to grow up in a culture unharmed, even if it wasn't their own culture; and so in a way the white colonists succeeded in subjugating and supressing maori culture.

My question is not about why the teachers or why such behaviour was tolerated, as all the other questions are asking; it was a racist and atrocious time. But my question is about the part where it says "in those days no one would take a maori bag to town... it wasn't like these days when you see these baskets everywhere - all colours, all sorts of patterns...". If Shane, the central subject of the story being discussed was born in a later time, when such things stopped being "unwelcome" as the suppression tried to imply, why wasn't he given a maori name? The story talks about how shane was given a maori name because their culture was subject to persecution of sorts, but if with time it has improved to the point where maori culture has integrated with modern day new zealand as the book talks about, then why was there a need to name Shane so?

Being a female would excuse one of a mistake, it would mean there were certain things you shouldn't do that men could. Although there was more to the story, the message of female inequality, was greatly portrayed. Additionally, the girls relationship with Flora, as if that was who she wanted to be, free to be her own self, which is why she may have helped Flora escape, but to face the inevitable, both are always brought back to reality.

One burning question that still remains is why it was okay that she disobeyed her father just because she was female.

It started off showing how comfortable she was with her fathers job and what it entails, and went on to show her development and change by giving the first scenario in which her actions changed, suggesting a change in mindset. This gave room for more development, and was less sudden and rushed than what is usually portrayed, which was refreshing. I also appreciated how the thoughts of the character entailed how she herself was also unsure of these changes and did not understand them, as I found that to be realistic.

I am left wondering whether these developments lead to her changing her involvement in her fathers job and on the farm, and if she had done for another animal what she had done to Flora.

As opposed to simply stating she had come across a dead body, Walker used features and their descriptions to slowly make it more apparent. The addition of elements such as the discovery of the noose then gave a slight backstory to the body, while still subtle. The overall writing seemed to be a great example of showing and not telling.

I am left wondering if Myop ever went on to tell anyone about her discovery, or if she had kept it to herself.

At the beginning the setting is beautiful which is conveyed with the great amount of imagery that the author uses. The main character is taking all of this in and enjoying her time outside with all the different flowers. However, at the end, the hung man is discovered and even though the way its told isn't extremely grotesque, we still know that the little girl seeing this figuratively marked the end of not only her summer ( as the author directly states), but of the beauty around her and quite possibly her innocence.

One burning question I have is- Why was the man grinning? Of course another question I have is- Why was he hung?- but the answer to why he was grinning is one that I really want to hear.

In the time that this story takes place, sexism was not just common, but it was the way people lived. Women were treated as much less than men and were only trusted with housework and jobs that required little effort, brains or strength. This story is told by a girl of those times who has been taught these sexist views her whole life and knows nothing but to oblige to them. The story shows how she believes that her dad killing and skinning foxes was very normal and something that all guys could do. However, as it does this, it also shows that the little girl is extremely comfortable with her dad doing this violent task, which is something that most men and people of that time wouldn't see as very "feminine". This subtle contrast is very interesting and also how she goes from not minding it to starting to dislike it a lot. This also shows how she goes from simply trusting and thinking whatever her dad wants her to, to forming her own ideas and opinions about the topic.

One burning question I have is wether or not she stops her dad from killing foxes later on.

The way the narrator described the sea urchin was by using words such as "alive" and " it tastes as if flesh was a mineral". This suggests that he didn't enjoy it, along with the fact that he kept throwing up. However, the taste and need to like them was enough to make him go back for more.

One burning question I have is how many people have had the same reaction to the sea urchins and still come back for more. I have this question because the lady who works at the restaurant says "I know what you want" as soon as he comes back, insinuating that she's had many people come back despite not initially liking the flavor.

This story was perhaps my favorite out of all the other ones I read and also the most heart breaking. I found many things interesting about the story including the fact that it is about institutional racism in Polynesia due to color and traditions. The problem of racism has been around since almost the beginning of time with typically whiter-skinned people believing they are better than us darker-skinned people and other certain cultures. This story explores how even though they are all the same race, the teacher had a certain hatred for Riripeti for simply being darker and not being able to speak much English. Despite knowing that Riripeti was much younger and brought up in a family of a certain culture, the teacher continuosly punished Riripeti for not being "perfect". I also found Riripeti's development very interesting yet hard to read. At the beginning she's this happy little child with bright eyes and a a wide smile. The teacher's racism gets to her in such a way however, that all the life she had in her soon fades and she eventually, dies.

One burning question I have is about the actual book that this excerpt is from- Baby No-Eyes. I want to know what happens after this and if the main character is ever able to live freely and in a surrounding that accepts her.

One thing I found interesting in this story was the way the sea connects to this larger story about feminism and religious/cultural ideologies. The little girl wants to desperately find a swimming pool for women because she believes that they too deserve to enjoy themselves in these pools and have the same pleasures as the men surrounding her. The connection between the water and freedom is one that I've heard in other works of literature and film. These works of art connect this lifeless entity to the ideology of true freedom saying things like "only water is truly free" and "to be free we must be like water". Songs also use different analogies, similes and symbolism for freedom, such as Hair by Lady Gaga, in which she connects her freedom of expression and sense of self to her hair and the freedom that she should have over changing and controlling it. Hanan Al-Shaykh does this same thing by connecting these two things except here, unlike in many movies, its more literal and forward.

A burning question I have is wether or not the grandmas views changed throughout the development of the story.
