The difference would be in terms of diversity. However, there were MANY differences. First and foremost, Dr. Seuss's book had many racist stereotypes of people of color, while "Say Something" not only fought these stereotypes, but gave these students of color the spot light. Additionally, "Say Something" had a great message for the readers, which encouraged them to share their voice with the world. Not one person is labeled the hero but all are put in the spot light equally. The events occurring in the book are definitely relatable to a variety students. Opposing to how in the Snow White book it is a completely made up story which only includes a similar type of character. There is a labeled hero who is of a dominant group in society.

It could also be relevant and somewhat similar to the struggle of poor individuals of color in this country as well. Often, people of color in the United States have very little to start with in life, and they would love nothing more than to rise above in spite of it. Okonkwo's tribe comes into contact with cunning invading Europeans, while the peaceful peoples of Arda in the Silmarillion are besieged by the fallen Vala Morgoth. However, there are far more differences than similarities. The peoples of the Silmarillion obviously have a European feel to them, while Okonkwo's people are Nigerian. There is a greater focus on rising above challenges in Things Fall Apart, but there is more of a good vs. evil theme in the Silmarillion. The Personality Potion is for upper-elementary students, the protagonist is a white British boy, bullying is a key part of the story, stereotypes are utilized, and the book focuses on a potion that gives you confidence. The Day You Begin has a wider point of view (multiple students of color), it subverts stereotypes, gives more nuance to feeling alienated (due to the food you eat, what you can do, how you look), and is written for younger elementary students.

Elephant and Piggie talked about inclusion, valued diversity, and appreciated everyone's differences. In a very different manner, Diary of a Wimpy Kid shows discrimination against anyone who is different or not "cool enough". Even with the cheese, anyone who touched it was automatically isolated and discriminated against. The only similarity these two books share is the fact that they are well-known books that are given to children to read. They mention lots of different races (or species in one case), but that's it.

The similarities are that they both have a dreamy and exaggerated element to them sometimes. They are pretty different beyond that. If I Ran the Zoo is very short and rhymes and is about one subject while The Arrival is longer, and about a story that changes subjects. 

If I ran the zoo shows strangely proportioned caricatures of non white people, similar to some that are in the Jim Crow museum. On one page of the book, the boy names an animal that he wants for the zoo and says the "brave cheiftan" ride it. He also says that he would like a cheiftan for the zoo, so he is saying he wants a person for the zoo.

The Arrival has no caricatures, and shows characters in different situations as full people. It shows an immigrant going through difficulties while finding a new home, and shows people who immigrated in the past helping those that are new to the country.

They Both Die at the End deals with the concept of receiving a message the day that you die, alerting you it is your time. At the beginning of each chapter, it gives a small picture of each character in it, but all of the characters were white children. The Lion is the bad guy, despite being the 'King of the Jungle' and has to be saved by a tiny mouse. In White Fang, my non-competency book, the natives abuse and neglect poor little White Fang, but the white people treat him well and he comes to trust them. I would compare the Lion in Fables from Africa to the natives in White Fang based on their roles in the story. But, I feel that the comparison of the mouse from Fables from Africa to the natives and the Lion to the white men is more interesting, and seems to fit a little better in reality.
