The Statue of David was created between 1501 and 1504. It's a large, marble statue inspired by the Biblical hero David after the battle between David and Goliath from the Christian Bible. Because it was originally commissioned for the Cathedral of Florence, it was meant to be a series of large statues places in their valued church. Michelangelo was asked to finish this project after it was left untouched for 25 years by sculptors Agostino di Duccio, and Antonio Rossellino, due to their rejection of the block of marble due to the imperfections in the stone, which is believed to have threatened the stability of such a huge statue.

"Michelangelo's David"
