Painting of Windigo

This is a painting of a Windigo by Canadian Native American artist Norval Morrisseau (Copper Thunderbird). The Wappinger believed that Windigo was an evil spirit that took control of men out in the dark woods at night. It was believed that he would take control of them as the starved and turn them into cannibals. A person could also be inhabited by Windigo by being bitten by him, being cursed by a shaman, or through their dreams. The only way to rid a person of the evil spirit was the kill them and burn their body to ashes. This shows how their religion was heavily involved with spirits.

This is a drawing of a Algonquian shaman, or medicine man. According to the religious beliefs held by the Wappinger, shamans were able to communicate with the Great Spirit "Kitchie Manitou." They also conducted rituals and cermonies in the community, like those done at a burial site in the other image. This represents the tribes belief in a connection between man and spirit.

Indian Burial Ground

Located on the East side of the Hudson River near the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, it is believed that this mound is the site of Indian burial ceremonies by the Wappinger or other local tribes. After death, members of the tribe would be put here to become one with the Creator. From the research that I conducted, this is not an officially marked site. However, it is believed to be legitimate by ethnobotany and Native American scholars, as well as descendants of Native Americans themselves.
