Assignment 1-1: "Mazing Aging"

The first painting depicts a 3D maze on a 2D piece of paper, with hands symbolizing two generations, while the still-life objects on the right represent the losses associated with aging, such as changes in family dynamics, property, mobility, and autonomy. I used the interplay of dimensions to create a sense of confusion, not only for the generation experiencing aging but also for the younger one providing care, highlighting the complexity of family care.

Assignment 1-2: "A Resolved Patient"

The second painting critiques doctors who view elderly patients solely as a collection of failing organs rather than as individuals with dignity, emotions, and meaning in life. Here, I portrayed the organs and bones in a contour style, mimicking medical imaging that often reduces patients to mere shapes and forms. I also depicted one of the doctor's hands in the same manner to suggest a potential future outcome if this inhumane medical approach doesn't change.

Assignment 1-3: "Sand Castle"

The final painting offers an abstract representation of a sandcastle forming at the bottom of an hourglass. Elderly individuals often become frail and vulnerable as they approach the end of life, much like the delicate sandcastle. However, just as constructing the castle creates memories and significance, the end of life holds its own meaning and values.

Assignment 2: "The Shadow of the Kidnedy“

The theme of my painting is using the shadow of internal organs as a metaphor for death because we cannot see the shadow of our organs while we are alive. I chose this unique perspective to examine the rib cage, which is a vessel for both life and death. From this angle, it resembles a tunnel, perhaps a tunnel leading from life to death. This canvas is quite large, and I've never painted anything this big before, especially with many long and large strokes. It feels like my whole body is moving along with the brush, and I sense a certain exchange and interaction with the painting itself. So, more than just being visually appealing, I hope the painting conveys my emotions.
