In this lesson we learn the basics with excel. When you first open excel, the screen that appears is called the EXCEL START SCREEN. From there you are able to pick one of the three options that you have to start a workbook; NEW WORKBOOK, TEMPLATE, or RECENTLY EDITED WORKBOOK. The RIBBON is another feature with many capabilities in Excel. You can customize what is on the ribbon along with whether it is there or not.

Similar to the ribbon, the QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR is another feature with many customizable options in Excel. BACKSTAGE VIEW is another feature of Excel 2013, it allows you many options for saving, opening a file, printing, and sharing your workbooks. We also learned that there are four viewing options in Excel, each for a different purpose. These views are Normal view, Page Layout view, and Page Break view.

In this FLASS assignment we learned about opening and creating workbooks. A WORKBOOK is what an Excel file is called. Each workbook can contain multiple worksheets. You can open a blank, new, workbook, open a template, or open a recent workbook. A RECENT WORKBOOK is a workbook that you have recently edited or worked on. In addition, if you frequently use a particular workbook you can PIN the workbook. Pinning a workbook will keep it at the top of your backstage view screen for easier access.

Another option for opening a new workbook is to open a TEMPLATE. A template is a redesigned spreadsheet you can use to create a new workbook quickly. Templates often include custom formatting and redesigned formulas. If you need to work with a workbook made with an earlier version on Excel, you would need to use COMPATIBILITY MODE.
