King loved Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolent resistance (known as satyagraha) and was deeply inspired by it. Another figure that King was inspired by went by the name of Benjamin Mays, an African American minister, educator, and civil rights activist. Mays allowed King to pursue his studies, believing that education was power. This sparked an idea in the people of Montgomery, which was to boycott public transportation that discriminated against people of color.
