The Haitian Revolution spanned from 1791-1804 and was a huge event in history. This Revolution created the second independent country in the Americas, After the United States gained independence in 1783. When Haiti became a state as a result of a slave insurrection, U.S. political leaders ,many of whom were slaveowners reacted ambivalently, at times offering assistance to quell the uprising and, later in the revolution, supporting Toussaint Louverture's soldiers.
