9:00AM Act III Discussion: Protagonist or Antagonist? by Cassandra

What other unlikable or unsympathetic protagonists have you encountered in other stories, novels, television shows, or movies? Describe why these figures are unsympathetic. Why might an author choose to focus on a character who readers and audience members view negatively?

This character of Macbeth can be compared to Loki from the avengers movies. Loki is a villain and always tries to get ahead while people may like both of these characters they are unsympathetic/unlikable protagonists. ~Tori C.

Another unlikable protagonist I have encountered in a movie is the Grinch from the movie "The Grinch". The Grinch is unsympathetic because he tries to ruin Christmas for the people of Whoville. An author might choose to focus on a negative character because it is the main influencer of the plot. For example, the outcome of the story is solely based on the actions of the Grinch. Usually when the protagonist is good, they are creating the plot but the villain/antagonist tries to change it. In The Grinch, the protagonist is the one creating the plot.

My apologies, but I don't know a lot of stories, or other things. the reason these characters are "unsympathetic" is because readers come to fiction to enjoy it, not be reminded of bad things. An author might use these characters, however, in order to make their work interesting, because not everyone is as good as the next, also maybe, to show an interesting transformation in a characters personality over experiences.

Another unsympathetic protagonist that I've encountered in literature is Ebenezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol. Despite being the very clear main character of the story, Scrooge demonstrates some very clear unlikable qualities. Not only has he become stingy and rude to his loyal employee, he's formed a vendetta against a joyous and beloved holiday such as Christmas. Further into the story, we can see other characters criticizing and complaining about him and his behavior. This further solidifies how unlikable he is to the reader. He does make an effort to improve and by the end of the story he shows he has, which can't be ignored.

He is trying to rise the ranks of the Boston Police Department while also being a mole for the Irish Mob. He is unsympathetic because he is willing to kill other members of the police force, and even his own boss to get what he wants. The director might want to focus on this character, because it shows that people will do what it takes to become top man.

I am a huge sucker for the Greek mythos. And the Norse mythos but that's not as important right now. Narcissus, a Greek hunter, was very, very selfish. Not to mention full of himself, hence the name. For his lack of sympathy and compassion, he was doomed to stare at his own reflection for the rest of his pitiful mortal life. He turned into a flower, which is pretty nice at the first thought, but it really isnt. You gotta interact with bees and other strange wild animals every day.
In Norse mythology, there's Loki. He's kinda like the Marvel Loki, but he isnt a misunderstood puppydog. He killed Baldr with the one thing that could (Mistletoe) just for the fun of it. If that isnt uncaring, I honestly dont know what is. He ended up with snake venom constantly pouring into his eyes, so I guess that counts as a punishment, but he somehow broke free of it during Ragnarok, so I dont know.

One other unsympathetic character that I know of is princess/queen Levana from the book Fairest of the Lunar Chronicles series. One of the things she did that made her unlikable was that she started trying to court a man who was already married and when that man’s wife died in childbirth, Levana used her powers to make herself look like the man’s wife to get him to fall in love with her. Another thing she did was after she married that man a few years later she ended up murdering him and blaming it on a palace guard. I think an author might try to focus on a character like this when they are creating a backstory and trying to explain why they are the way they are.

A good example of this can be found in the beginning of Red Dead Redemption 2, where the protagonist, Arthur Morgan is portrayed as selfish and evil for being an outlaw (judging by the crimes you have committed towards the beginning and throughout the game), yet the story later evolves and he becomes more of a complex character.
