This is a poem that highlights the greatness, the "magic", of black girls and women. Throughout the poem Browne lists the stereotypical things black girls are "supposed" to do. She accompanies this list with citing several strong public figures who are black women including; Viola Davis, Kerry Washington, and Michelle Obama which creates a transition into encouragement and an emphasis on taking pride in being black. She ultimately advises black girls and women to show the world their "magic."

Melissa Williams CLCD Review

Williams stated numerous great points on how powerful this work by Browne is. She applauds Browne saying, "She chronicles the many injustices, limitations, and stereotypes that Black girls face, leading up to a resounding celebration of Black girlhood and a rejection of all that is harmful." The flow of this poem does nothing but add more meaning to it. I agree with William that the ending repetitive chorus is very significant. "You Black Girl Shine! You Black Girl Bloom!" Williams states "This will stick with readers long after they have closed the book."

From the very beginning of the poem, readers can spot numerous stereotypes. As someone of African American . decent, I am familiar with many of these stereotypes so I can connect with them on a personal level. Also the resolution to a problem of the oppression of black women is shown. It too is obvious that the role of women is significant to the purpose of Browne's work as well. Browne also uses the feature of noting heroes, listing many notable women who have influence over not just the African American community but some, the world.
